Default 2004 XJ8 x350 1st to second slippage?

Good day,

I just purchased this car. 2 previous owner 126k mile black xj8.

When the car shifts from 1st to 2nd and you are easy on the gas the shift is seamless and smooth. If you get it say part throttle for an increased acceleration, the trans will feel like it 'slips' before it catches into 2nd. It's for a very very short duration, just doesn't feel like the other gears. I've researched this issue on the XF transmission through your wonderful forum and unable to locate.

I did locate that if the engine is missing, the trans may miss shift as it knows what to do from the engine.

I did get a P0171 code last night (left cylinder bank lean). I cleared the code, it has yet to come back. That being said maybe this is causing the issue? Thoughts?

I don't know when last transmission flush was, would this not affect all gears and not just 1st to 2nd shift?

I'm replacing the fuel filter and fuel filter O-rings. I read this as the troubleshooting guide.

Other than that, car is pretty solid just did coil spring conversion to ditch the air suspension.

Thank you for your help!

Forgot to mention this morning I got a left rear wheel speed sensor error.. restarting the car resolved that. I guess I can see if the speed sensor ring is loose? It didn’t have this code when it had that p0171.. I also don’t know why this would only affect the 1-2 shift

thanks!

With those codes you're asking for fake trans issues.

Sounds great, I'll chase down the p0171 and go from there. I do appreciate your input. Replacing the fuel filter tonight.

Probably better to move your thread to the X350 forum where the expertise is. Howevr based on my own experience, the sensors themselves are usually the failure item. This was proved on my own X350 when the technician swapped the wheel sensors over left to right and the fault moved with the sensor. They are not expensive if you look on the internet.

The P0171 could be any of the usual causes but #1 would be an air leak.

Addressing your original question, I offer that my 04 xj8 has had a slippy one two shift the whole time I have had it. Before I bought it, I had a euro mechanic drive it and he pronounced it OK. When the car is cold, it feels better. After it's hot, the hesitation between one and two becomes noticeable. Other shifts are imperceptible. I test drove an 05 last week which was rougher on all shifts than mine. That one has 86K, mine has 131K and has felt the same since I got it at 109K four years ago. I just have taught myself to not stand on it till it's in 2nd and there has been no deterioration of performance. The p171 and p174 codes have been a constant problem for another thread I guess.

Posted a new member post- thanks!

as for the sloppy/slippy 1-2 shift have you ever looked into doing a trans fluid/filter change and possible trans software update? All the I’m sure predictable thoughts I’ve had for mine once this weather warms up.

I just did the fuel filter tonight, it was an original jaguar one! The corrosion on it indicates it was pretty old if not original.

the p0171 I think was a loose intake boot- I checked air filter and didn’t tighten clamp enough. Oops!

Make sure it's now running closed loop and no pending codes (bear in mind many are 2-trip ones) and also that you have no ABS/DSC/TC issues and all may be well.

Except probably it's NEVER had a trans fluid, filter & sleeve change and needs one.

Sounds great.

I changed the fuel filter last night with new o-rings as that was original.

The trans has no leaks I can see except one slightly damp area.. but not pouring out or anything.

I researched what fluid to run.. read the long thread on it here, I will be running the LG6 stuff. I found it 145 shipped on ebay here

As for the pan, studs, shaft seal, this looks to fit a xj8 exactly: here

I'll probably get the sleeve kit off here

I found some videos on how to do the procedure, each helpful in it's own way. Check them out if you want

Just wanted to update you guys - since changing the fuel filter the 1-2 shift isnt noticeable anymore and does not seem to sleep.

That being said I'm not gunning the car around until I do trans service.

Thanks again!
