Default About to buy 05 XJR. Have question - RESOLVED

Looking at an 05 xjr. 40k miles. Price is 21k. Clean car fax, looks brand new.

On the test drive I noticed some vibration. I could see it in the steering wheel and feel it. It was not bad, but it was there.

The dealer (not a jag dealer) drove it and said it was likely a tire balance problem or a minor flat spot due to it sitting.

Advice? Known issues.

Also, does buying this car make me pretentious. I feel insecure about buying a jag.

Could be a balance issue or more likely a bent wheel or two.

18" to 20" wheels are notorious for getting bent easily on pot holes and such. My XJR had three bent wheels when I bought it, both rears and the spare!

Take it someplace that has a Hunter Road Force Balance machine, nothing else will tell you "how bent" the wheel may be.

Thank you. I will call the dealer tomorrow and see if he will let me do that.

I'm kind of serious about the pretentious question. I deal with the public and need to maintain an image of affluence but not too flashy. What is the reaction to these cars. What comments do you get.

Welcome to the forum Scylla,

It's understated but you will get noticed. Everyone will think it cost much more than you paid for it.

Pretentious - that's driving around in someone else's Jaguar.

Surely it is a car for a gentleman of taste and discrimination.

A Ferrari, Maser, or Bentley/Rolls would be flashy, a Jag is elegant and sophisticated, IMHO.

People like Jaguars. Just don't rev the engine too much (it'll attract attention). Seriously, Jags simply don't carry the stigma that Mercedes & BMWs do... I think you'll be okay. And if they were flat spots they'd work themselves out in a few miles of driving.

Thanks again. It's a slate gray 2005 XJR with under 50k. I traded a real nice '05 Mustang Gt conv. 5 speed with a Hurst short shifter an extra set of wheels and a real nice Kenwood stereo. That and $6,100 put me in the Jag. It seems garage kept and old man driven.

A lot of my trepidation was that this was the first car without a warranty that I bought since I was a kid. Second, I hated losing a convertible. My wife and two daughters don't want to ride in it. It's cramped and the wind messes up there hair.

It was time to grow up and abandon the plastic fantastic.

It has Nav, but the bluetooth hasn't been installed. I'll need to find the best solution to that. The car is pretty much perfect except for maybe a sliht curb rash on one rim.

I put 200 miles on it. I am very pleasantly surprised by the absolutely cushy ride and the cutting edge performance. This thing is powerful light and rides on rails. How do they get that combo?

Seems like the ultimate sleeper and I can't believe I ould get this much car this cheap. Alternately I was looking at an '08 m3 sedan for 45k or an '06 m5.

Honestly, of the three, this is the car that I liked the most.

So what happened with your vibration issue? Was it resolved? How?

The dealer had it balanced, and I test drove it again. It rode like butter, so I bought it.

Scylla,

Following your successful test and purchase, I've amended the thread title to include 'RESOLVED'.
