I recently purchase a 2005 XJ8 and I would like to upgrade the stereo system.
I'm not happy with the sound, I currently have an Audi Q7 with Bose speaker and love the sound. I imagine the stereo itself would be difficult to swap to where it will fit, so looking for suggestion in improving the sound.
If you have upgraded your sound system, would love to hear from you.
I have no suggestions on changing the sound system from stock--however one important note is that the OE door speakers were prone to failure from voice coil wires detaching. Chances are if the speakers are original from 2005 several don't work anymore. The mid range speakers at the bottom of the door panels.
Will also depend on what sound system you have--the base 6 (?) speaker, or the Alpine 12 speaker?
If you really want too go for the best highest quality sound system use a lot of sound deadning and insulation. Resonix seems too be praised as the best sound deadner apply it too everything and put foam on the front fender liners as our vehicles have foam on the rears but none on the front. Morel makes the best speakers in the market but there not cheap infinity kappa series are also praised as being really good our door speakers are 6-1/2 inch and I believe the dashboard speakers if u have the premium sound system is 4inch speakers get an nice quality amp with a lot of channels this will allow you too have true surround sound. The head unit matters a lot too.
Our cars really don’t have any performance modifications unless you have an XJR so sound system upgrades and custom interior work is the only real mods you can do. Crutchfield.com is a good website too buy all your sound system equipment needs
If you have standard audio, just be aware there are only door mids and tweeters and no speakers in the rear deck/trunk access. I was thinking of hooking up a powered sub in the trunk using speaker-level inputs so I didn't have to run wires from the headunit, but that ended up being a dead end.
These came with two levels of audio, Premium and Audiophile. The Premium has a 6.5" and a tweeter in each door. The Audiophile has the same plus a pair of 6.5" "subs" in the rear deck and a pair of ambience speakers in the dash. The subs are not going to shake the ground around the car, but the ambience speakers in the dash really do add to the imaging.
If you have the "Premium," which is really the base system, make sure all of the door speakers are working. The tweeters don't fail, but the bigger speakers do, and it's usually an easy fix. the wires from the connector to the voice coil corrode, so soldering a new wire there fixes it almost every time.
One of mine didn't fix, and I ended up replacing the front door speakers. If you decide to replace the door speakers, you're not going to find a good mounting adapter, but what you can doo is use the factory speaker's plastic frame as an adapter. Cut out the speaker cone and the plastic arms that hold the magnet and voice coil, and what's left is a frame you can screw aftermarket 6.5s onto, and then bolt them right back into the door the way the factory speakers mounted.
do we have the spec of the original speakers? If looking for replacement speakers
have had sucess with that on other cars and the orginal speakers are usually cheap/poor compared to what you can buy aftermarket (and still cheap)
2W93-18808-AC is the original part number. 6.5" speaker as others mentioned. Wasn't able to find wattage or ohm info on it.
If you are careful you can pop the speaker grille off without taking off the entire door card to get a sense of what it looks like (or even repair?), however you won't be able to access the mount without removing the door card.

The speakers are 4 ohms, 6.5 inch, but they actually contain the mount in the speaker unit. When you remove them you won't have any appropriate way to mount a replacement. The mounting surface is way too far inside the door.
Here are front and rear views of the speaker. You can use the housing of these as a perfect mount for replacements, which is what I did in my front doors. Cut the cone out, then cut the plastic bars that hold the magnet. What's left is an empty ring with a flat surface you can mount your replacement 6.5 onto, and it even includes the connector for the factory plug.
I'm not sure if you have a brick and mortar speaker store like a Crutchfield where you are, but it's totally worth pulling the speakers you're going to replace and bringing them to a shop while you look for replacements. It helps to visualize the sizing and mounting points. If you have any questions about an install or other wiring quirks, just shoot me a PM.
I’m currently replacing all my door lock actuators and while in there I decided to replace the standard door mid-bass speakers. The original audio system sounded awful. Likely a few of the door speakers were not fully operational. After deciding to replace them I did not spend a lot of time testing what issues they had.
I purchased the speaker adaptors (as mentioned by other posters) but had to run a dremel around the inner lip as the new speakers were slightly to fat. The adaptors allow for this.
I ran a line of silicon before mounting the adaptors (as they recommend) and the speakers were easy to fit.
One thing I noticed was the old speakers are as light as a feather (!?) the new ones feel like almost a couple of pounds each.
I was conscious of not exceeding the size of the original speaker depth to avoid any issues so went with a set of DS18 PRO 6.5" Slim Mid-Bass 250W Speakers w/ Carbon Fiber Cone.
These cost AU$380 excluding delivery.
I was blown away by the results. Just playing a selection of tracks from various CDs in the single in-dash system the sound quality was amazing !
I have also purchased a CarPlay system for installation soon but that will be another thread.
