Default Car tries to pull away at lights with foot on brake?

Dear Forum,

No codes. Car tries to pull away at traffic lights when in drive with foot on brake. Feels like someone has gently rear-ended you when the back of the car goes down?
Any ideas, please?
Regards,
Ray

Does the car idle at normal revs in neutral?

Thank you - Yes, starts higher, but then quickly settles down to a steady 656 revs

This sounds similar to 'the lurch' experienced on 2003-4 S-types. Well documented on this site.

Thanks Mikey. Read the posts on your site. My 'lurch' only comes from time to time when I am stationary at traffic lights and in Drive with my foot on the brake (which is most of the time here in Dubai)! If I sit there in Neutral, no lurch and (for the most part) my car shifts perfectly when moving - The very occasional hard shift I put down to age (2005) and mileage (100,000)? I do not see why my transmission would need to adapt to different drivers having differing styles of sitting at traffic lights in drive with their foot on their brake?!!
However, I did previously (for a time) have a P0783 fault code; I followed the steps in the DTC guide and it went away.....

Be sure you don't have your foot on the accelerator at the same time as the brake pedal, and remove any floor mats from the drivers side

Thank you Cambo, but there is no rise in revs when this event occurs......

I get a slight but noticable dip at the rear of the car when at a junction or lights when - keeping the transmission in Drive and having engaged the parking brake - I take my foot off the footbrake.

It also happens if I'm waiting with parking brake on and the transmission in Neutral when I move the selector to Drive but don't let the parking brake off.

I think that's normal. If that's what you're getting and it seems to be too much the I would suggest you check the bushes in the upper and lower wishbones in the rear suspension.

Thanks Partick the Cat. I get it with foot on footbrake in drive; haven't tried with drive and parking brake......Rear upper and lower wishbone bushes are brand new!

Dear Forum,
Just to end this post the problem was a 'Drum'? in the gearbox that was cracked nearly in two. When the trans got hot, the crack expanded, leaked oil and locked the third (I think) gear up. This intermittent 'seize-up' was also what caused the billowing grey/white smoke out of my exhaust! I must admit, I still do not understand why a fault in the gearbox should cause smoke from the exhaust - But since the problem has gone away, perhaps I shouldn't care?

What you experienced was actually a defect in the design, and I would hope that Jaguar corrected this on the later models as this was definitely a safety issue. When applying the brake, tilt your right foot slightly to the left so as to avoid contact with the accelerator. If using a floor mat, the mat would have to be trimmed a bit in the area next to the accelerator, or omitted altogether.

Rickkk - My overriding problem was a faulty transmission. However, what you say is absolutely true, because a few days ago I was turning right into a main road (LHD) and a truck u-turning in the middle of the road came very close so I braked and (unfortunately) accelerated at the same time!
