Default Coolant Temperature Sensor

I was driving home down the interstate last night when the MIL came on. A few seconds later I got "Restricted Performance," then a red light and I saw the temp gauge was off the top of the scale. I pulled over and shut the car off. Nothing was dripping, the car didn't smell hot, and it wasn't making any "hot noises." I restated the car and the temp gauge went back to normal and the restricted performance message was gone, although I still had the MIL.

I really need to get my WDS working, but obviously the car was not hot, which would seem to eliminate the usual suspects - thermotat, water pump, coolant leak, etc. I'm thinking this leaves a faulty temp senxor. Anybdy had a problem like this?

Reset the code (P0128) and pray it was an anomaly?

I have just had two episodes when the fans were running after engine stopped and may have been running when engine running and I did not hear it.

Temp gauge was smack on 50% where it always was and checked temp at head tank with IR gun and it was about 75 deg C.

I will keep IR gun in car and "monitor situation".
