Default Dexron VI & Lubegard alternative to LifeGuard6 ATF

I posted in the general tech help too but Lubegard claims that Dexron VI plus Lubegard Platinum can be used in lieu of the ever so spendy LifeGuard6/Jaguar fluid.

Now I've read that people have used Pentosin ATF1 successfully, has anyone tried the Lubegard stuff? Is it snake oil?

Here in the European Union, it is law to quote standards that things must meet to prevent 'cosy deals' between manufacturers and suppliers. I would have thought the US is similar. So Jaguar should publish the SAE or other standard for their transmission fluid. If your Dexron VI plus Lubguard Platinum meets the standard it is OK.

Having said that, my Rover 75 gearbox is a Jatco, and only one fluid is recommended, from Texaco, but the manufacturer MG Rover is now bust and gone. See what the gearbox manufacturer says for your gearbox. Is the box not a ZF from Germany ?

It is a ZF yes, and they only recommend their own fluid Lifeguard6 which is a cool $45 a liter....

We have compatible fluid and use it in all three of our shops:

Ken, the list of applications doesn't include the Jag XJR 2004 with the ZF6HP26 transmission.

Here's information I found on trans fluid for the ZF6HP26 in the XJR and XJ8. I did some research and called ZF North America (NA). They said the ZF LifeGuard 6 Fluid can be used instead of the Jaguar Mineral Oil ($51 per litre at my local Jag dealer). ZF NA gave me a distributor for the ZF fluid, since it is hard to get. I spoke with Erickson Industries 1-800-388-4418; they are a distributor for ZF Transmissions and fluids. They said the fluid can ordered through them for $23.12 per litre.

I looked at the transmission fluid brands yesterday at the auto parts store and Royal Purple Synthetic ATF met the standards of many modern transmissions, including Mercedes Benz and Lexus. I have a vague memory that the XJ shares the same transmission with the Lexus LS460. It also meets the JTS 3309 standard for my Volvo Cross Country Aisin Warner tranny.
But no mention of Jaguar on the bottle. What do you all think?

I will be using Pentosin ATF1 in my 04 XJR with in the next month or so. I also picked up a liter of the Jaguar modifier to see if it will get rid of the noise between shifts and the hunting at constant speeds. If this doesn't fix it, next will be a new converter. I have heard of guys talk about owners using Mobil 1 in there BMW's with ZF transmissions. There is also a guy on these forums who has used Castrol fluid. I do believe Jag released a Service Bulliten for using Castrol in certain years and models.

I used Pentosin ATF1 in mine too, didn't use the modifier but it did get rid of the whomp/whoop noise when it shifted.

I'll answer my own question: It does not meet the Shell M1375.4 standard, so not appropriate for our cars.

Pentosin ATF1 is not that expensive. I found a store that sells it in 1 liter for $13, 5 liters for $60 and 20 liters for $227.
