Unhappy engine noise knock x350 xj8 2004

Hi Guys & Girls, I hope someone has some good news for me...
Engine noise/knock.

I have heard a little noise when I start the car sometimes, sounds like a valve noise to me, not sure.

But now:
I just had an oil change and the noise has gotten much much worse. I only noticed the noise after I drove the car down the highway for about 5 hours.

note: My rear defrost light comes on when I start the car. I had this trouble before when oil covered my MAP sensor (I think) - I think that is in the hose connected to the pcv valve - yes/no? Once I replaced the sensor the light went out.

It maybe more of a tick tick than a knock, but it is loud now. The car seems to still run ok, maybe. I hope someone can tell me this is not a costly fix, but I bet I'm in a world of hurt. Merry Christmas. Help.

ps I have spent at least 10,000 on this car in one year and I have only owned it for a year, no lie. I'm guessing that must be a all time record.

I wish that were true...try owning one of the old Lucas Jags!

Not sure about your problem, but my guess would be valve train noise. Did you change to a thinner oil? If so, going back to a thicker oil may help.

Also, a small exhaust leak can sometimes sound like a ticking noise. For exhaust, it is usually loudest right after starting a cold engine or when loading it up a hill/ acceleration etc.

What miles on the car ? The variable valves controller could be making this noise, it is not unknown. Have you tried the mechanic's stethoscope trick, (long screwdriver), to listen to locate where the noise is originating ?

The rear defrost, and front heated windshield (if fitted) will come on automatically when you start the car when outside temp is something like 5deg C or cooler. So, this has nothing to do with the oil change or the engine ticking.

I was wondering if oil wasn't added to the oil filter first maybe a air block could stop the oil from getting in the engine and causing a problem. Yes, the oil is thin because it is 100% synthetic. I can add a additive to thicken it but I think something is wrong now. thank you for the quick reply!

I thought the defrost might come on by itself as well, but in my case it comes on when it is 80 degrees outside. And when I replaced that sensor it stopped doing that. Very strange! I don't know if it is related. How does oil get in that pcv tube anyway. ps I replaced the pcv valve.
and..... Thanks for the reply!!!! I need all the info/help I can get.

I don't know if anybody is still watching my thread... I hope someone is, maybe a mechanic. I started the car today - same sound, popped inside for a second, came back out, the car was spitting and sputting and the engine was clearly slowing down and slowing down fast. I jumped in and turned it off. Anybody? I think it must be done.

fyi: This is my second Jag, both engines failed. I do all the regular maintenance - I am religious about it. Doesn't seem fair.

No check engine light or anything?
You may try pulling some codes to see if they can help diagnose the problem?
Ultimately, you may want to get it towed to a reputable garage to look at it, I know thats going to cost money too. :-(
