Clarification
Hello All,
I have decided to write up a very comprehensive article about unlocking all the secrets to the 2001 to 2009 Jaguar Key Fob, how it is made, how to get a key blank and key blank made, how to program the transponder to the car's ignition
Happy New Year!

Being not the sharpest tool in the box, I am confused by som of the instructions for re-programming fobs and wonder if I can get some clarification on two points.
1, The article states "(Do not repeat the complete sequence if you make
a mistake mid way as the first transmitter will be erased if you do)." does this mean that you have permanently lost the coding and the fob has been rendered useless?
2. The article further states "If not try again from step 1. It may take two try’s to get it correct as the procedure is all about the speed, timing and doing it smoothly."
This would appear to suggest that no permanent damage to the fob has been done?
In my case the fob stopped working I checked the battery and had the fob checked by a local garage who confirmed that the fob was transmitting a 433 mhz signal from all four buttons but having tried on numerous occasions. the system entered the set up mode but would not respond to either of my two fobs.

Greytop,
1. No, the transmitter is not rendered useless, simply if a mistake is made all transmitters to the car will be unprogrammed to the car. Thus, the programming sequence will need to be done for all transmitters from the beginning.
2. Yes, no permanent damage can be done to a transmitter simply by reprogramming it no matter how many times one tries.
Keeping the drivers door open is required while programming.

Just to be clear, it's not the transponder in the fob that's being reprogrammed, it's the security system in the car (which can store up to a maximum of five [?] different transponder numbers).
Each transponder has a unique number permanently set at manufacture. (It's virtually the same as the ID micro-chip implant that you can get the vetenarian to put in your cat's or dog's scruff).
It's better to think of the 'reprogramming' as a process of registering the key with the car's security system.
It doesn't actually register the first two keys of the process, it checks to see if they are already registered. That's to prevent someone programming further keys when they only have one (or none); if a car is stolen it's far more likely to have only one key rather than two.

Thank you Patrick,
that seems to have cleared up why I cannot register my fobs.
I have one original working fob plus an original fob with a broken switch and a new fob I have just purchased. To date I have been trying to register only the original fob and the new one.
What I intend to do now is register all three, as it is only the head lamp switch on the broken original that does not work and hopefully that might do the trick, otherwise the trip into Bristol, a long wait and an eye watering bill!.

To update the position with my key fobs.
I have had numerous attempts to reprogramme the car to my key fobs with no success. All of my fobs were working but for no apparent reason the car suddenly refused to respond to them. I immediately changed the batteries but still no go. I resurrected an original fob with an intermittent headlamp button, so as to have two original registered fobs in the line up but to no avail.
The car signifies it is in the set up mode with the correct audible and light recognition but does not respond with any of the fobs and signifies a fault on completion of the the operation. The fobs have been checked and are working.
I have since been informed that a key tech was reprogramming a Renault that was parked two feet away from my car immediately before my fobs ceased to work.
I have booked a tech to re-programme the car this coming Monday and will keep the Forum abreast of the outcome.
In the meantime I would like to thank all the members who have chipped in to offer me their help and advice and can now say I understand far more about the system and how it works.

Latest update:
The key tech arrived and confirmed all my fobs were in working order but encountered the same problem I had when he tried to programme the receiver, namely the system went into the programme mode but could not detect the fobs, thus seeming to point to the receiver unit which could be faulty or in a mode that he could not address, with his equipment, leaving me to take the car to a diagnostic operator who can interrogate the system.
So just in case I have snapped up a driver's door module/receiver for £20, which might prove to be a good investment and in any case worth the punt.
If anyone can tell me if this change of module is a viable proposition, or if it might effect the coding of the chips in the ignition key I would be most obliged.

Having at last found an Independant Jaguar Garage with all the tools and a fully trained experienced technician at Wiltshire Jaguar Centre Swindon. It took no time at all to diagnose the problem as a faulty drivers door module. He has located a salvage fully working replacement with the RIGHT individual part number within hours and the cost is a tiny percentage of main dealer estimates. At last happiness.

lcmjaguar,
Hey thanks for the Key-Fob article! I'm sure that this is a God send for XJ8,S Type & X Type cars.......but wouldn't you know it, It doesn't work on XKR's.....I'm talking about the 2 Key deal to make up to 8 keys......Right off the Bat the article starts talking about the Blinking Alarm light on the dash......and the XKR's Alarm light is on the Shifter Gate....I should have known that wouldn't work and it didn't.....So! I'm back on First.....Do you know of any way to Program the Keys, like this, for the XK8 - XKR, other than having the Key Guys come out and reprogram them.....you would think, they should have some type of a simple Program too......I've talked with 3 different Key Guys and I would like to say, They are an independent bunch.....and they are expensive to deal with! As a matter of fact they will rip you a new one when you ask how much!

Greytop and Meirion1, Well! thanks to both of you for the information but once again, that didn't help us X-100 Owners....Does anyone know where that same type of information can be found for the XK Car? This Key Guy is a crook without a mask and he can say $250.00 without a blink......Oh! I forgot, "CASH" is his every other word!
