Default just bought my !st Jag 2004 xj8

as soon as i sat behind the wheel and started it up I was hooked..the power and the way the big cat purred blew me away..
the exterior is that gorgeous metaliic dark radiant red.. dont a ding.scratch or flaw in the paint anywhere!! iit was pampers and garage kept for sure.. new tires.. the engine compartment clean.. everything looks and feels new.. the only minor issue is the light ivory interior is so dirty and the leather has some black stress marks on it.. But i dont mind investing the money to restore it..
i have been a greman luxury car owner my whole life.. I wanted to take the plunge and this jag is like floating on clouds.. smooth and fast...
Here is my only issue and from what i have read online.. the air suspension on this car can be a problem.. the light actually came on a few times.. then went off.. because of my fear and what i read.. i know think the car rides a little rougher but of course this could be in my head... the light is out again..and at 107,000 miles i have to assume some major work has been done on this car.. its just drives like a dream... i have an appt with a recommended private mechanic.. i just dont want to go down the road of spending $$$$ to fix things i dont need too... advice??

Hi and welcome the first thing to do is fault code read it but at that mileage it's probably the compressor and you can buy a piston ring from England if your handy with spanners you can do the job yourself it's a simple job that many have done on this forum . But get the code first and post it on here and we can help you more . Enjoy the ownership of your jag they are fantastic cars even with there little faults, we like pictures of your car

thanks Clifton....I really have never driven a car that appeals to me like this one..I have had numerous luxo greman cars my whole life.. but as soon as started the jag and heard the powerful cat pur.. sat in the most gorgeus cabin and took off for a text drive it was all over...I never drove a sports sedan that was as poweful with amazing handling and felt like I was floating on clouds..
dont like the new bodystyles.. theese are the last elegant Jags..I could not be happier

I agree! Just bought my Super V/8 as well. Same color combo. I also own an 88 300SE Benz and an 84 BMW 633CSI. The Jag has the best climate control, the most power, and gets the most compliments. The German cars are easier to work on under the hood though!

Grant I agree.. I have only in my whole owned Germans, multiple benzes, bmw, lots of porsches and audis... also fun to drive and reliable with just basic reg maintnance,,,but this Jag has totally made me forgot all about Stutgard...this car handles like a porshce....i have never felt a firmer ride at high speeds with a suspension that is like floating on clouds!!! I will do all the proper maintenance and see what happens.....

Do you live in that area? I used to live in the Noho Arts District, just south of there.

I live in West Hollywood.. can you please recommend a reasonable knowledgeable independent Jag mechanic..
the car is nearly perfect.. but the air fault light now comes on and then goes off and its unpredictable.. It may be in my head,, but i think I feel the front end taking rough road pavement harder.. i just dont know. i also dont have any history on the car..
am I being paranoid? probably...advice??please

I used to live in West Hollywood also, and way back in the day there used to be a place on Fairfax and Santa Monica called Angelo's Jaguar Service. Of course, they went out of business and I believe it's a private Rolls Royce dealer now.

Anyways, I'm afraid I don't know of any other Jag specialists in the area. For mechanical issues that I can't handle myself, I go to North Hollywood Auto Repair. They're the only trustworthy mechanics I know.

But even they would not be able to properly diagnose an Air Suspension Fault. Most times the dealership itself can't even properly diagnose it. There are so many variables in the Air Suspension system...shocks, air lines, height sensors, compressor, valve block, air reservoir, control module...I wasted a lot of time and money trying to get rid of that fault light. The only thing that made it go away permanently was to get rid of the system entirely and install coilover shocks. I will never have to worry about my car becoming a lowrider on the ground on a cold morning again. And anyways, the ride quality is not much different. In fact, it handles a bit better at highway speeds.

Take a look on the forum. At least once a week, there's someone asking for help with their air suspension system. It's a bad system, no matter what anyone says, and it's not worth the trouble. That's my two cents, for what it's worth.

yeah i have read so many bullshit issues with the air suspension.. I thought it was cool the first few days i had the car... now it scares me knowing its only a matter of time till i have to deal with that bullshit.. can i ask you what did the conversion cost you? and does the car still feel like its floating on clouds.. its the one thing I love about it.. after all the rough firm rides with my german cars///

I got the Arnott kit from Rockauto for around $1200. I recouped some of that money by selling my reservoir and compressor.

To be honest, even with the air suspension, it never felt like it was floating on clouds to me. I've owned two examples of this model and was never impressed with the suspension, especially compared with my old Jag from the 80s.

So that being said, the conversion feels about the same to me. It's not floating on clouds, but its definitely not rock hard like most other cars these days.

i swear to god.. my Jag floats on pillows.. i dont feel the slightest bump in the road.. i know my car was pampered and maybe the previous owner replaced the compressor and did shock work..but no exaggeration.. this car has blown me away.. the speed. the handling and the smooth ride hook hooked me for life

my only fear is i like to drive to vegas and i am not sure these sensitive technologically sophisticated computer sysyems will make it.. I never break down.. that is a fear I wont take

Maybe you feel like you're on pillows because you're used to German cars!

Greman (German) I beg to differ! My 88 300SE is as smooth as glass on the freeway. The Jag tends to bob up/down more than I would like. EVERY car I've owned broke. Be prepared for it.

Dear JagLover50!

Sorry but if you ever drive an bmw m, you never think this!

I also drive 4 Mercedes C, E, BMW 530, M5, Audi A4, A6, A8.

So i think i know the german cars, but a Jag is a car to cruise

All the best

Gerry

Mr Jaglover, I can't believe what I am reading, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Bragging about money and calling someones opinion stupid is not on IMHO.

Just like assh-les everybody has one. And for the record... their money wasn't wisely spent on teaching you how to spell or form a sentence! How many Greman (German) cars have I owned? Well... 6. But I bought them with money I earned. For a new member, you seem rather stuck on yourself but that's my opinion! I think I'll just ignore your "Greman sttement"and move on.

Hi Gents!

I think we should have fun with our Jags and nothing else!

One old man told me:

Jaguar obliged

Think about it!

Everybody has his one opinion and that´s great

Wish you all a great weekend!

All the best

Gerry
