Is a leak from the thermostat housing common?

I own a 04 VDP and it has a leak coming from the top of the thermostat housing right in the the seam of the plastic? I read about someone else having a leak from the thermostat housing, is that common? Does anyone know where the cheapest place to buy a thermostat housing is? Or is there something I can put on it to seal the leak?

Thermostat housing or expansion tank? If it is the expansion tank then the best course is to replace it, eventually it will fail completely and since it is so easy to fix, this is a simple, low cost fix.... Jaguar have never managed to make an expansion tank that lasts in the recent past. Both my S-Type suffered from cracking in the expansion tank and the XJ8's don't seem to be any better.

04, if you want to help out a fellow member, and sponsor, try Ken at britishparts.com (also Motorcars ltd), they have almost all original Jag parts, for about 60% of dealer cost. Just call and ask for him. He ships very fast!

We've got other members here, jag-genius also supplies parts at equally good prices. Just see his thread here and ask for your part, he'll contact you.

I am pretty sure it is the thermostat housing, but i could be wrong. There is a smaller hose that goes from the top of the coolant reservoir (expansion tank?) to the thermostat housing. When I have the hood open and I am looking at the motor right in the middle there is a coolant hose that comes out and to the right toward the drivers side, the leak is directly aft of that from the seam of the plastic. Also I was wondering what is the difference between a XJ8 and VDP. I bought a XJ8 repair manual for the car, i was wondering it it was all going to be the same?

The other problem I am having is the car is not blowing any air from the vents. anyone know what it could be? Should I just start a new thread?

Thermostat

It depends on how much you are leaking. When you installed did you properly clean the mating surfaces and install the thermostat correctly. Unfortunately, I don't know the main cause of why your thermostat leaking.

the housing this plastic and like the expansion tank plastic can crack from old age. it not as common as a expansion tank but i do replace them once in a full moon. older 4.0L engine crack aswell but again its the age of it. 2004 5yrs old i would say it just normal wear and tear.

Have same problem with leaking top termostat housing. In the same time found out broken O2 Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 2. I mean its leaking housing broke it because termostat located right above that O2 sensor.
Thanks for good part vendors links.

This is a very old thread that you have chosen to comment on. It would be helpful if you could also provide your vehicle information such as MY and and other details.

What DTCs are stored in the system? The water outlet of the 4.2 litre unit is not located above the oxygen sensor(s).
