LED Foglamp DRLs
 

I have been interested in adding DRLs to my Super V8 for a while now.
I have seen the ones which Evan has done, very impressive, but maybe more work than I wanted to do.
My main criteria was:
-Look OEM as possible, to not look 'Halfords' (UK Slang)
-Cheap to make
-Retain Foglamp functionality

Here are the parts I used:

1 - ADD A CIRCUIT FUSE PIGGY BACK TAP STANDARD FUSE HOLDER ATO ATC 12v 24v VOLT | eBay
Granville 0236 Black RTV Silicone Sealant 310ml | eBay
5m or so good quality speaker clable, heatshrink and cable ties

Sorry for the lack of photos, but basically baked the foglamps in the oven to soften the RTV. Gently prize the glass off with a blunt knife and remove old RTV. Took the LED ring and glued it to the back of the black plastic inner housing (perfect diameter). Fed the cable though the back and re-assembled with generous amounts of RTV. I soldered a waterproof socket on each DRL. I then created a new loom to run alongside the existing bumper loom, with waterproof plugs for both DRLs and another waterproof socket to next to the bumper loom connector, to the rest of the car. I used fuse 30 for the power with the fuse tap.

The verdict:
7/10 for me personally. I like the way you can see each LED, reminds me of the tailamps. Just wish they were not as blue and matched the temperature of the HIDs better, but to be honest they match better in real life. We shall see how long the cheap LEDs last under constant use...

What temperature setting was the oven? I'll follow your plan but not to put LED DRLs but to remove the metal plate I believe is rendering my X350 foglights useless in that the light it gives isn't helpful in a fog.

Does UK term Halfords mean "GAY" as in Rob Halford from Judas Priest???

Seth, sorry I can't remember the exact figure, but I think it was about 120 degrees (celcius), very cautiously!

viper1996, nope. Halfords is a UK car accessories chain, that are famous for tacky aftermarket add-ons.

Anyway an update, 1 or 2 of the leds are on their way out and I still don't care for the blue tint.

Thanks. Nice work Alecesolme! The heat of the halogen fogs must be the reason for those LEDs going out so soon. Apparently they shouldn't be in the same housing as globes generating heat. That's what I found out when I replaced my parking lights with LEDs. They went out much quicker than the original halogens because of the heat generated by the main beam globe.
