New here and looking for a XJR

I have always liked the jaguars since my dad and I restored a 74 xj. I have been looking for a XJR for the extra power of the supercharged 4.0. My family is getting bigger and the mustang is getting tight on space so I have been thinking about a XJR. Looking for a few answers before I dive in.

What years should I stay away from?
What kind of power can they make with out opening the engine up?
Are there any after market exhaust systems for them?
Has any one plugged the silencing holes on the supercharger to get more noise like the mustang cobra?
Any plug and play tuners like a ODBII?

Thought I would pop in and say Welcome to the forum. We are so far ahead of the rest of the world others are probably finishing their Christmas Lunch. (4.30pm 26th here)

XJR is a great choice in my opinion...guessing you haven't driven one yet if you are looking for more power than standard. They rarely come on the market here and I am no expert on them.

I'm sure more relevant help will arrive...Good Luck.

Get the 4.2L engine if possible. A lot of nice upgrades and the timing tensioners are pretty rock solid.

Recently bought an 07. Couldn't be happier with the performance or sound. While not offensive, the throaty sound is ALWAYS present.
I have been blown away by the car. Drive one, you will probably be hooked, just the way it is.

What year starts the 4.2? I want the luxury but I want a performance car as well more noise for me is ok.
Any one know how much power can be tweaked out of this mighty jag?
Thanks guys. I am sure I will be here to stay. I sold off my Lincoln mark VIII in search for something with more room and power.

The 4.2 litre V8 started in the X350 model series. These were the first of the aluminium XJ saloons, and the first modern aluminium cars made by Jaguar, (there were, of course, the 200-odd XK120 cars of 1948/49).

So you would be looking at an XJ from 2004-2009. I'm not sure if any cars got to the US in 2003, anyways I think they would be called Model Year 2004 in the USA. I think you'd find the performance more than adequate. There isn't a huge amount you can do to improve the engine, but no doubt there are some ingenious chaps in the USA who can do so.

Of course, you'll get all the luxury you need, although maybe not all you'll want. Jaguar were a bit behind the times on ICE equipment, but even so, it's still pretty good. I think the large-screen type sat-nav was an option, not standard.

Main thing is not the goodies, but the baddies. Has car been maintained correctly and carefully, by an owner who cherished his car ? You don't want one that has been neglected by an uncaring oaf.

Often wondered why some are trying to get more horses, unless you are thinking some track days,
'Any one know how much power can be tweaked out of this mighty jag?' No I don't know that.

What does appeal to me is the way Jaguar finds all the horses instantly. Whilst my 'Tickford' LTD has the power, with the two cars side by side the Jag leaves it for dead with a smaller engine,(and better fuel economy) it is just a refined package.

If you haven't driven one yet I would be interested in your thoughts when you do and the comparison to the Mustang.
Cheers,Neil

I have a few I have found around most are 1999-2002 in my price range. I may have to up it for a 04 for the 4.2. I found one local to me to go test drive this coming week. I am a hot rodder and I have never been able to leave any thing stock. So entering a world of higher class cars I wanted to make sure I was not getting something that cant be modified. I will let you know What I think.

1) What is the max power (with good tune) that the 4.0 will hold?
2) what and who makes a programmer for them?
Thanks!

Hi, there are a couple of members who are putting there 350's on the track. Have a look at this post https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-my-xjr-96325/

Good luck on your search!

I found a OK XJR-6 a few hours away from me. How are they compared to the v8?

SteveM 01-07-2014 04:21 PM

Well first you need to decide if you want the 98-03 (X308) style or the 04 and up style (X350, X358). They're two completely different cars.

On the older models you can get 550 hp and more with a twin screw. It all depends on how much you want to spend. Not sure what's the most horsepower that's been had on the newer ones, but it's less because there's no twin screw set-up available yet.

Mr.Cnc 01-08-2014 08:16 PM

Great! Well here is a start. I like the looks of the 2000 XJR. I am trying to find a BRG one or a black one. Who sells the twin screw set up? Any one know of any shops that could help some?

SteveM 01-09-2014 11:45 AM

Andre does:

I have not heard of an XJR-6. perhaps this is an imported car, not designed for the US market?

Mr.Cnc 01-11-2014 11:06 AM

It was the supercharged I-6. Not sure first year but last was 97 before they changed to the 4.0 V8. A guy I work with has one. And yes they were in the US

ryejag 01-12-2014 07:31 AM

Mr Cnc

that explains it. I was thinking x350 models. I know on the other side of the pond, alternative engines are available.

XJR-6 is the very early XJR for the X300 model series, with a S/C version of the AJ16 six cylinder engine. Only made 1994-1997, so not many around now.

Mr.Cnc 01-19-2014 08:43 PM

Going to look at a car that has a mint body but is not running right. Owner said it is the charcoal box. Any one have any information about this? It is a 1998 with 103k on the clock.
