Is it really easy to replace the oxygen sensor on an 06 XJ base?

I just paid my local dealer $1,000 for that and I'm feeling like kicking myself. Am I wrong?

I haven't done the job on our X350 yet, so I can't tell you for certain, but the Workshop Manual describes the process in five easy-sounding steps (not including removing the engine splash guard, which is also easy). So unless they had to remove the exhaust manifold or downpipe, $1000 does seem steep.

There are four O2 sensors, one upstream and one downstream for each cylinder bank. jaguarmerriamparts says the MSRPs on the sensors are $244 and $283 each (their discounted prices are about 15% lower than MSRP). It does seem difficult to imagine that it took $750.00 in labor to replace one O2 sensor, but perhaps one of our other members can explain why that might be the case.

How does your invoice break out the charges?

Just guessing, but sounds like about 1 hour charged to plug in the code reader, another hour to change out the sensor, then an hour for lunch at the Palm, then another hour to check the fluid levels, and 1 more hour to give it a wash. And of course about $75 for those superfragilistic, Jaguar approved, "shop supplies". Sound about right?

BTW, FRGIII2014, are you planning on being at Fair Lakes on Sunday? I'm expecting my tags to finally arrive today and hope to be there.

I just ordered a pair of genuine Denso upstream O2 sensors (same as the OEM Jag part) for $87 each from Rock Auto.

And a special Oxygen Sensor Removal Socket off ebay for $16

I looked closer at the job when I changed the oil a few months ago, i'd say no more that 15mins per sensor, if you are taking it nice & steady. Plus an hour or so of messing around getting the car raised, removing and replacing the undertray.

Thank you. I hope to be there if it's not snowing or freezing. I should have just put the car in the garage and sought advice before agreeing to the repairs.

I did both in about 30mins

You can get them off with spanner just make sure you disconnect the cables first
Apply some of the supplied lube on the thread before installing the new ones.
Make sure none of it goes on the sensor though

I also did mine without raising the car. Access to the cable and sensor is just behind and inward of the front wheels

I used the denso sensor (denso branded) as it half the price of the Jag branded ones and is the same part.
I can look up the part numbers if you need them but I posted them a the time

I changed mine because i'd done 150,000 km's on the originals not that they were faulty
I did notice a marked change in economy after the change but the XJR's do run too rich anyway so leaning it out a tad was a good thing.
