replacing thermostat housing

replacing thermostat housing
I've got the new replacement thermostat housing which includes the thermostat, thermostat cover, temp sender, etc.
However, I can't see how the big open end opposite the thermostat will connect/seal to wherever it goes (if you look at the attached, it is the opening right where the number 16 is).
There's no seal on the edge or inside, yet coolant definitely flows there, so it has to be connected/sealed to something (into the intake manifold?).
Please help. I want to make sure I have all the parts I need before I start working on this, and since I see no seal, etc., I'm concerned I'll pull the old one off and find out that I need some sort of seal, etc.
Any and all help appreciated.
Thanks,
Gordon

no he's talking about the neck that goes down and bolt to the engine just below the front of the engine. This piece needs to be replaced to and it has the large 1/4"oring seal on it. You replace that piece on the engine first, then put the intake metal elbow back on and the the rest of the t sta housing and vaseline to opening to help slip it on

The only think I see under 18 is the seal for the thermostat. Sorry I'm so lame, but I don't see anything that seals/fits behind the housing (right where the arrow to #16 is). That end has to seal up to something, and I don't know what that is or how it seals. And I don't want to take it apart and then find out I'm missing some stuff. The 6000 page service manual is no help (at least I can't find it).

Thanks guys!! Now it makes sense. From the diagram, it doesn't look like 23 and 24 mate to the opening where 16 is, but I just went to the garage, and voila! It fits. I couldn't figure out how/where 23/24 went (when I looked at the replacement). Thanks for the tip on mounting it first and using some vaseline Looks like I got all I need (other than I'm still struggling on finding all the hoses I need. The two coolant reservoir hoses are out of stock at APW. It looks like one is the "coolant vent hose". But since I'm sure the local dealer will rape me on price and this hose is easy to get to, I'll probably just get it at Jaguar Parts Center since it is easy to get to and replace at a later time. There are several additional hoses that connect to some sort of "valve" on the throttle body and I can't for the life of me find them in any diagram, nor locate any of them (by part number) on the web. So something I'll probably have to go to the dealer for.
Hopefully in a week or two this new-to-us car will have everything done (preventive maintenance) so there's no question as to whether something might not have been taken care of (since it all will have been). Looking forward to it (getting everything done....
