serpentine belt and tensioner pulley
 

Does anyone know if there is already a sticky on removal and replacement of serpentine belt for the X350 ('05 VDP). I have read lots of post regarding this, but cant seem to find anything regarding the R&R process. My battery has drained twice now and I get an avalanche of fault codes causing all systems to shut down. This happened to me yesterday on the way back home. I had the car serviced recently for a bad strut and I asked them to check the alternator voltage and I was told the alternator was churning out the required voltage and that battery was also good, so I am going to try to replace the tension pulley and a new serpentine belt. Any help is much appreciated. I might need to replace the alternator so if there is a sticky for this that anyone knows of, that would be great to know as well. None of these items are covered under my extended warranty, but I'm pretty confident I can do these minor things in my workshop.

Ok. Here is the step by step. Forgot the pics. But my kid helped me do it, so it's super easy. Get the serpentine belt tool. Remove engine cover. Remove radiator cover. Then begin process.

1) Remove sensor from air tube. (the square one)
2) Unscrew air intake snorkel screws from radiator support. Set aside.
3) Slacken ring clamp from throttle body. Slacken ring clamp from air box.
4) Remove screw that attaches air box to chassis. Set aside.
5) Remove air filter lid from air box. Takes a while. Be careful here, don't break the plastic
hangers.
6) Remove air filter. Set aside.
7) Lift air intake tube and air box lid and lay to the side. No need to disconnect air tube from air
box lid or disconnect sensor (the round one)
8) Detach snorkel from air box. Remove snorkel. Set aside
9) Lift out air box and set aside.

This part is optional, but makes it easier:

10) Release clip from water pump intake; remove radiator hose from water pump intake. Have towels in place to catch radiator fluid. Use a tie down strap or something similar to hold hose out of the way. You can use a latex glove and a rubber band to wrap around water pump intake to catch fluid coming out of intake housing.

11) use serpentine belt tool and a 3/8" extension about three inches long. Attach ratchet extension to serpentine belt tool. Place extension end into serpentine belt tensioner and push to the left.

12) Remove belt.

13) Use 15mm socket to remove serpentine belt tensioner. I replaced the pulley. If yours is good, skip this step. I should have since it didn't solve my problem, but oh well, at least I eliminated that. I'll be replacing the other pulleys one by one until I get to the water pump or power steering, both of which should be covered under extended warranty.

14) Find diagram for serpentine belt routing. Route new belt and slip over tensioner.

15) Reverse the steps for putting everything back together.

16) Feel good that you saved a few hundred dollars. Slip your four year old a twenty spot for helping you and go make yourself a drink.

Its time for me to undertake this mammoth task. I will use your directions above and add photographs where appropriate.
Anything else comes to mind that I could change while I have the belt and pulley off?
Now the final question is where to purchase said belt and pulley?

pulley and belt can be purchased at any auto parts store. In my case, the pulley was fine, but I replaced it anyways. The problem noise turned out to be coming from the alternator pulley, so if you feel like replacing your alternator while you have all the stuff taken off, it would be a good time to do it..lol... other than that, nothing else comes to mind, other than the obvious air filter replacement and maybe new rubber hoses if yours are showing wear and tear. good luck.

I got most of my parts from either RockAuto or AutoPartsWarehouse. I replaced the following
All coolant hoses
water pump
idler pulley
thermostat
thermostat housing tower
serpentine belt

There was one or two hoses that were not available at Rockauto or Autopartswarehouse that I had to get at the dealer. But I got everything else (much cheaper).

Thanks guys, after doing an in depth inspection of the frontal area yesturday I found a water leak emanating from the water pump area.

Sooooo, It looks like I am going to be replacing all manner of things in that area. Not looking forward to that, because you know once I get that air pipe off and remove those hoses I am going to see the aux pump and all the other bits down there that don't see the light of day.

Changed out the serpentine belt today and the idler pulley, left the belt tensioner alone as it seemed to be working ok.

Followed the info above and it worked well for me. I would definitely recommend removing the large water hose though as it really does get in the way.

Also remember to get some coolant as you will lose some removing that hose.

Yes...forgot to mention that! Once the hose is removed, you will need to top up as you lose about a quart of coolant.

Just curious, but what do you mean by serpentine belt tool? Does it not use a standard socket of some sort?

Ah ok, it's basically a breaker bar without the swivel. I've got this covered then. I bought a belt but hadn't taken a close look at the tensioner yet since the engine cover and air box tube needs removed for a clean view. I've just had enough of the cold start chirp! I knew it was a bad idea to let the belt get wet changing the thermostat housing. I think that first start after getting the belt soaked finally did it in.

Man that was easier than I expected. I didn't remove the coolant hose so doing that side of the motor was completely by feel. Start to finish time was 30 minutes. I still had another 30 minutes in my lunch to eat, but my hands now look like hell.
