Default Shuddering/rumbling/vibration at 50-60mph

2006 VDP, 41k miles

I seem to have a shuddering/rumbling/vibration sensation between 50 and 60 mph. I feel it in the seat and also somewhat in the wheel. It happens most severe when I am not on the gas pedal (i.e., coasting). The sound/sensation it makes is almost as if I were gently pushing the brake pedal on a car with warped rotors at high speed. It also happens in neutral.

What do you think it could be?

My first guess would be tires/wheels out of balance, but that doesn't necessarily explain why it seems to be worse when I am coasting rather than on the gas pedal/accelerating.

My next guess would be lower control arm bushings, I guess I should check to see if they are leaking. I would be surprised if they are bad already.

My last and most expensive guess is that there is something wrong with the torque converter? I have already noticed that the car seems to make a clunking sound when getting off the gas sometimes as the RPMs just start to kick down to idle.

What do you guys think? Anyone have the same symptoms and solve the problem? I just got an alignment and this did not help.

Like you my first take is tires. Tell us what kind of tires you are running, hi perf. Summer or all season, and how many miles on them.

I am running the factory Continental Contiprocontact touring tires. I am not sure how old they are, they came with the car when I bought it a month ago. They have good tread on them, but the rears are a little more worn than the fronts. My VDP came with the 18' Rapier wheels.

The symptoms you describe are the classic road roar that our cars are particularly prone to. The problem is most pronounced with, but not limited to, Summer Hi Perf unidrectional tires after some amout of ware/milage.

If you have the classic inside ware pattern the risk goes up. With unidrectional tires you can try floping the tire on the wheel and moving the tire to the other side of the car and putting it on the back. You will hear a lot of "claptrap" about brand related tire roar but the problem presents to a greater or lessor degree in all tire brands.

I cured my tire roar with 2 new tires, all season, on the front and flopping the remaining tires to the rear. Hope this helps and works for you.

Yes have the same thing, I thought a flat spot on the tyre, due to standing for a few days, but I don't think this is it, seems more like a universal joint worn. Are these the rubber donuts, that Jaguar use, or normal UJ'S.

Interesting somebody mentioned flatspotting. The car was sitting for a couple MONTHS in a garage before I bought it.

I will probably get the tires balanced. If that doesn't fix it, I'll just wait until it's time to get new tires.

Default tire noise?

Rub you hands across the tread on tires inner tread. Is the surface flat, or not? If not then your tires are feathered. The alignment needs to be done, and the tires will need to be replaced to fix that issue.

Well, I am planning on getting new tires, probably in the summer sometime. I will follow up when I do that!

I am having a similar issue with my 2005 Super V8. At exactly 50mph, a rumble appears every other second. The car just got an inspection and new tires/balancing/alignment (Pirelli OEM tires). Any other speed I do not notice any unusual road noise. Is this a function of the Pzero Rosso unidirectional tires or a faulty balancing by the dealer?

In my case, I'm pretty sure the tires are slightly flatspotted. And I'm pretty sure it's the fronts, because if I have people sitting in the back, the problem almost goes away. Also the vibration seems to come from the front and can be felt in the steering wheel.
