Slight ticking noise, only in 'Drive'

Hello all. Things have recently moved on for me in 'Jaguar World'. My Dad kindly offered to let me have his 2004 XJR if I sell my 2003 XJR (which has various issues as per earlier posts) and give him whatever money I get. He's 83 and a car nut, has a VW runabout plus 4 other 'hobby' cars, but my Mum is in the latter stages of dementia, and he can't look after the cars anymore. It’s a no brainer for me because his XJR is aesthetically mint and has 20k less on the clock than mine does. So, I've sold my problematic XJR and am about to take ownership of his. He's just spent over £2k on suspension and brake work, all good. However, I drove it before it went in for the work and noticed a noise. It's a rhythmic, slight ticking sound, that’s only audible with the window down when moving slowly next to a wall or other vehicle (i.e. the noise is bouncing off), or when stationary and held on the footbrake. When you put into 'Park', the noise stops. I mentioned it to our mechanic - a Jaguar trained specialist we've used for a decade who generally knows his stuff - and he said it's the supercharger, and nothing to worry about; "it's normal". Thing is, the XJR I've just sold didn't have the noise, which struck me as odd? Can anyone enlighten me please? Do I take my mechanic’s explanation as read and not worry about it? Thanks.

Don't know much about your ticking sound but what is the increase in customs tariff to the Yorkshire Republic?

The SC does not stop turning when the car is shifted into park?
So it can't be the SC?
If you still suspect the SC it's an easy test? Remove the SC belt and drive the car around. You will have no problems BUT you will at once see how much that SC adds to the engines power! It will be a DOG to drive with the SC belt off!

I know first hand as I lost an idler pulley on my old STR and when it locked up it threw the SC belt.

Do the easy stuff first!

"The easy stuff"? I can barely change a light bulb, never mind remove a SC belt... I design roads and drive on them, but steer well clear of maintaining cars beyond very basic stuff, I'm afraid I'm useless. But yes, common sense I do have. The mechanic telling me it's "normal" and coming from the supercharger led me to the same place as you - why would it stop in Park? Surely it must be something to do with the gearbox / drivetrain?

Odd scenario, when the drive train is not actually in motion but under some light load.......perhaps one of three torque converter bolts to the flywheel slightly loose?

Hey, if you design roads....can you take some time off to come here to help out our road design engineers....they must all be on crack with the impractical designs they seem to agree upon.
Just leave behind the notion of the narrow B roads you guys have.

Well have the shop remove the belt and go for a drive?
This will eliminate all the SC stuff very quickly.
