I have a 2005 XJ8 super V8 and scared myself silly many times as well. Same problem at last I found out. Big foot and the more I push on the brake the more the car wanted to go at an intersection!!. I bet you that is the problem as well.

O.K. I'm going to weigh in here. I have actually had this experience twice. Both times were very traumatic! Actually the first time was both traumatic and dramatic because there were "consequences" from the event. No serious damage, except to my pride, so without going into details, let me just say "Consequences".

The second time it happened was just about 2 months ago, pulling into my garage.

Now, as the late Paul Harvey used to say, here is the rest of the story.

The first time it happened I was wearing a huge orthopedic boot on my broken right foot. I know that I definitely should not have been driving with that boot on. It was really dumb but nevertheless, that's what I did.

There is no mystery to what happened. When I eased on the brake while pulling into a parking spot, the right edge of my boot depressed the gas pedal and the harder I pushed the brake the more the tires squealed and the faster the engine revved. I was not smart enough to simply lift my foot but I was smart enough to reach forward and shut off the ignition. Albeit, just a tad too late to prevent causing myself acute embarrassment.

The most recent time, pulling into my garage, I had the same experience but this time I was wearing a pair of rather large, balky, wide soled, untied, running shoes. This really could have been catastrophic, like through the garage wall and into my house catastrophic. However, this time I realized exactly what was happening, that indeed the right side of my running shoe was pushing down the gas pedal, and I lifted and shifted my foot. Just in time! It's a very weird and scary experience.

Believe me, it feels like "unintended acceleration". It is very frightening and I can imagine why some folks would swear an oath that their car surged forward when they simply touched the brake pedal but in my case I was able to "reconstruct" the event and understand exactly what happened.

Since the occurance two months ago I have lowered my "Pedal Setting" and I remain acutely aware EVERYTIME i brake to place my foot completely on the brake pedal and not get "lazy" about actually lifting my foot off the accelerator.

I am not making any assumptions about anyone else's experiences on this thread. I am simply sharing MY experiences since they were so frightening and are both still clearly imbedded in my mind.

I had this happen early in my car's tenure with me and the issue was my size 11.5W feet and the positioning of the adjustable pedals. The failure mode (as many of us know) for the Throttle Position Sensor is that the car has, no and I mean no power at all.

Ironically given the Toyota remarks in this thread, guess who makes the TPS for our cars that is failure prone? Denso, a member of the Toyota group (keiretsu) who also makes the systems for Toyota....our TPS is a reverse pin version of the Toyota Avalon one.

I have never seen a situation of unintended acceleration occur without including "fat feet", or old drivers. There is so much redundancy built into these things that the failure mode is lack of throttle, not excessive throttle. Just my $.02

BwaaaaHaaaaHaa! I qualify in both criterion. Well, skinny feet actually, with wide shoes, but definitely old.

guys.........thx......but I stepped on the brake pedal only, and the car accelerated......and I'm lookin' for comments and help from those that have experienced the same.......so please, I'm not interested in sceptics or fat shoe stories.......and for you non-believer Jag mechanics, there are several complants posted at NHTSA.

jagownertoo,

In an above post I have shared my true and actual experiences. I attempted to convey the genuinely frightening feeling and shock that feeling produces.

My sincere comment to your post, offered with no skepticism, sarcasm or doubt, either intended or implied, is simply, continue to drive the car. Yes, to be sure with more than normal caution and, mentally prepared for a surge. See if it will repeat.

My sense is you're not going to be successful, in this forum, finding others who have experienced "Unintended Acceleration" in their Jaguar since this thread has been alive for more then a week now with no other "unexplained" experiences reported.

BTW, I'm not clear if you actually live in the community of Pebble Beach or were driving through on your way home from it's Lodge to Monterey, but Pebble Beach is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I have nothing but pure admiration and unadulterated envy for anyone fortunate to live in that magnificent place. Man how I love 17 Mile Drive. Both by bicycle (most of it) and by car (ALL of it.)

Please let us know what you find out and what you decide to do. I genuinely am interested in this and would like to know the outcome. Good luck with your pursuit of the truth and stay safe.

Regards, Quiet1

It sounds to me like you are finding that the people on this forum have not had the problem you think you have. If it has happened, it has happened to someone not following this forum.
Having had an Audi 5000 at the time when people were swearing on the Bible that their cars were taking off on them, it was found that there was no problem, it was the PEOPLE. The whole thing ruined the reputation of a fine car and made my resale low, so I got to suffer while these folks waxed eloquent in their indignation. I'm sure those folks were very sure the car was the problem, but they were very wrong.
You might as well try somewhere else and see if you can drum up some fervor.

Wow. There must be alot of lazy drivers out there. I have a size 13wide foot and not once has anything like that happened to me. In fact, there seems to be ample room.

thx.......I've never had a problem with the pedals either and I wear an average shoe size (11 1/2 med). It seems that some have a hard time accepting the fact of "acceleration while braking" or "unintended acceleration"......which should have been the title of this thread.

Just sharing my professional experience as a Jaguar technician for over 10 years. I can find a complaint about nearly anything I want to on the internet, or anywhere else....does not mean there is an actual problem.

Hope you find a resolution to your issue.

Oh please, and by your reasoning, so it goes for those who claim to be a technician and know it all. I pity the Jag owner that comes into the garage where you work.

now jagowner, no reason to fire back like that, jagtec1 only stated a fact (which, if you test out his theory, it really is true, for almost every product manufactured); then he wished you luck. You'll just alienate yourself with remarks like that.

Attitudes like this make us not want to help at all. I'm not the one here claiming to "know it all"....I never said that, I simply shared what my experience has been. I'm sorry you feel so badly for my customers, good thing they do not feel the way you do.

Good luck to you. I'm done with this thread.

I'm going to close this thread. Why? Jagownertoo, you basically don't want to accept any of the advice or opinions of the respondents, two of which are actual jaguar techs. Most threads on these forums might get a reply from one 'badged' tech, rarely two. You were very fortunate to get the number of replies you did from owners and specialists alike.

No more good will come from this thread, and you wouldn't get any more responses anyway based on your atitude. Oh, and don't bother starting a similar one. Consider this your one and only opportunity to discuss this topic.
