Default XJ8 2005 Transmission issues

My 2005 XJ8 with 37K is having transmission issues rough shifting in lower gears, squeek noise when shifting. Dealer put an additive in the transmission fluid for me but 500 miles later problems still exisit. Dealer says new transmission is the fix this car just went out of warranty> any help can it be fixed etc?

Thanks, Bill

Have you owned the car since new? Do you still have the shift squawk noise on shifts after the additive was installed or just the harsh shift? Do you get gearbox fault messages or check engine light? Was the TCM software updated and shift strategy adaptives cleared along with an adaptive drive cycle when the additive was installed?

Real-Tech;
I have not owned the car since new bought it with 29K on it last August, yes still have the noise after the additive but only shifting into 3rd gear now more before. No gear box faults or check engine light on. I do not know if the TCM software was updated and shift strategy adaptives cleared should I ask what else was done when the additive was put in?

Thanks

Every one I've put the additive in has had the noise fixed but then I always do the adaptive clear/reflash at the same time. Was the car still under warranty when they put the additive in? What's the last 6 digits of your VIN number for a history check?

Was this not some sort of recall thing? I just had them do something like this on my car for a problem in another thread.

The VIN number appears wrong, an '05 XJ last 6 digits should be Gxxxxx or possibly Hxxxxx if it is late production.

Hi, not sure about the additive but I had the "flashing" of the software done about 6 months ago and the local main dealer charged about £100 for it here in the UK which is roughly an hour's labour cost, it cured the problem, they told me to not use the sport mode button for about 500 miles or so, hope this helps, not sure whether you pay more or less in labour costs compared to us over here.

okay thanks, that basicly answers my question on the cost of it. 1 hour labor at my closest dealer is $120USD.

i called jaguar of greatneck (they claim they are the first stateside jaguar dealer) and i asked the service manager if they would check my fluid to see if all is good, the response i got was " i dont think weve ever even done that since the oil is usually good for around 100k, ill look into that and the software upgrade and give you a call tomorrow"

plus they charge $45 for a quart of oil.

my main problem is that i think the oil is low, when i was changing engine oil i noticed an oily transimission pan. i did some research here on the site and seen that pan gaskets and some sort of rubber sleeve seem to fail on this MY xj8.so i placed an order for the parts for relatively cheap from jaguarparts.com using this thread as a reference https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...t=transmission

im having a hardtime finding threads with vital information that imo should be stickied, ie, transmission TSB's, dipstick installation and partnumbers, DIY articles.

if anyone has anyone information on the above mentioned, please either pm them or post a link. im doing my best searching and reading about 20threads daily

thanks in advance,
-Vic

Hey strate, you're doing great by researching and browsing the xj sections. Remember, the xk8s, 2003 and up share your transmission, so you may also find some similar threads in there. Hang in there, you'll find the answers you're looking for eventually.

Hi again, the fluid in the box is special long life, and yes , it is supposed to last 100000 miles. The box is a sealed unit with no dipstick, on my previous car (4 litre xj8 year 2000) I had to have a replacement box, I found a second hand unit on ebay and got the special Esso fluid also on ebay. You need up to 10 litres for a complete fluid change including torque converter , nearly fainted when the main dealer said £25 a litre !!!
They are a great dealer and I have been going there for about 18 years and they let me supply my own parts etc and they fit them for me.
Search online for " Esso LT 71141 Fluid ".
On this car I asked them about a fluid change last Christmas and was advised by one of the mechanics to try the "flash" first , it worked a treat.
Good luck,

you could have a search on the UK forum as well

thanks for the info roviw, unfortunately the service manager never got back to me. ill be driving out to the dealer soon to pick up a set of front brake pads and 1quart of transmission fluid. while im over there i will have to see if i can get them to reflash the TCM and clear those drives adaptives.

on a sidenote, i currently have a 2000 4litre with a blown transmission. first gear is out, my father has been driving it like that for over a year. surprisingly every other gear works great with regular ATF.

Interesting about the earlier car, I think any of the boxes will work on regular ATF but they suggest the longlife oil as there is no "normal " way to top it up and keep a check on it as the box is sealed with no dipstick, the longlife oil must have different properties to make it do more miles without needing a change.
Hope you get on ok with the reflash if they do it.
