If this Autozone alternator does not work I would like to try your suggestion.

I will know by the end of the week. Fedex will deliver the alternator Tuesday.

If its early enough I will get Autozone to test it, with a printed out put hopefully,
Tuesday.

I agree, AutoZone is the worst in rebuilt parts. AdvanceAuto and NAPA is a much better choice.

I will find out soon enough.

Working on exhaust x-pipe installation adjustments today a gearbox fault appeared!

I am hoping that goes away with a good alternator!

Can you provide contact details of the place?

Have you searched the local area near you for an automotive electrical shop? They can usually have an alternator or starter refurbished the same day.

There is a rebuild place not far away. So would try them first.

Denso alternators are a very popular item, and brushes, slip rings and bearings are common between many of them.

Wasted a couple of hours this morning taking my original alternator to this alternator rebuild shop.
They looked at it and said they could not get spare parts for it thats after I told them over the phone what make it was etc!
They also said they could not test it AND tell me what the voltage output is.

Autozone tested it and said that it "passed" but could not tell me what the output voltage is. Same on the unit I got from Autozone so returned it there and then.

At this point I am seriously wondering if my problem is not the alternator.

Have you checked the voltage output of your old alternator, to be sure yours is bad? Harbor Freight has volt meters for free.

I did with an analog meter. As far as I could make out the voltage with engine running was 12.5 volts.

Which if accurate is way low.

With the new oem alternator with a voltage set point of 14.18 volts I was getting:

13.85 volts with engine running at idle and 12.78 volts across battery terminals with engine off.

The test sheet that came with the alternator says "voltage regulator set point" is 14.18 volts.

This was using a digital multimeter.

I currently have questions out to two alternator vendors asking what the voltage set point is on their recommended alternators.

Any reason to not install a higher amp alternator?

My original is around 130-140 Amp and one I am looking at is 250 Amp.

Scratch that as I want a Denso. So I have just purchased a reman Denso.
