Default When to change oil?

I have always in the past changed my oil every 3000 km, is that excessive or the norm ? Does Jaguar recommend synthetic ?. 90% of my driving is on the highway. My warranty company is recommending every 15,000 km

3000 km? Definitely excessive. Even 3000 miles is excessive. 5000 miles is probably more appropriate, 7500 miles is probably fine.

I change all my vehicles, at 6000 Miles with Mobil1 Synthetic and an OEM Oil Filter.

Mopar filter & M1 5W-20 for my Jeep
Mann filter & M1 0W-40 for the Benz
Jaguar filter & M1 5W-30 for the Jag

While I'm new to the Jaguar forum, I've been around, elsewhere.

Both of our vehices are on 10K mile changes. The Mercedes holds 8 quarts and seems to love Delvac 15-w40 diesel oil (odd, but go figure), and the Lexus gets Mobil 1

I've been doing 10K mile changes for, wow, since the early-90's, on Mobil 1, and have never, ever had an oil-related problem.

3K mile changes were fine, when oil was still pretty low-tech pre-mid-80's, but it's come a long, long way.

Even on the Honda ST1100 sport touring motorcycle I used to have, with unit lubrication of the engine/transmission (shared oil), I changed it at 5K miles. Knew some who did 10K, but they'd do said 10K miles in a week. Seriouslly.

Even back in 1980, Jaguar were on 7500 mile oil changes, but clearly, if one does lots of short journeys tootling around town, shorter intervals are beneficial. Oil is cheap, engines are expensive, sort of thing, but 3000 Kms !! Now that is really way, way, over the top on cautiousness. You must be changing oil every 2-3 months !

I drove an Astro Van for work with my last job and it was always loaded, the oils seemed to get dark pretty fast. My last car was an 1985 Mustang and it also didn't take long for the oil to get black (I did have quite the heavy foot at times). I guess I will do a 10,000 km change instead on this car, I just find 15 k to long but I will keep an eye on it at fill ups.

10,000 kms is OK, I would do that if I was doing lots of short journeys, I forgot to mention that diesel engines need more frequent changes in my opinion as the oil is under fair stress with the muck generated by combustion.

Actually, the blow-by gases created by diesel combustion don't need to be held in suspension like they do in gasoline motors, so diesels are, while maybe not more gentle on oil, don't need it changed as often.

Typically diesels also hold significantly more oil than do gasoline engines as well.

I have a vehicle equipped with a Cummins ISB turbo-diesel. Factory specs state change it every 12 months or 15K miles (24K km). That 5.9L engine does have a 4 gallon (15L) oil capacity, however.

Turbochargers are rough on oil...lotsa extra heat to remove from the turbo's bearings due to it being driven by scorching exhaust gas.
