1996 x300 - no instruments or dash lights

Hi guys,

I have a problem with my 1996 XJ6 3.2 whereby all the instruments on the dash have quit working. This started as an intermittent problem but now they very rarely work. There are no warning lights either, and the odometer/trip computer display does not light up.

I have the wiring diagram and tomorrow will test to see if power is getting to the connectors at the back of the cluster, but I wondered if this was a known problem at all before I go through the wiring with a fine toothcomb.

Cheers.

Welcome to the forum, TBJ! Make sure you stop by the New Members section and introduce yourself. Keep "hittin' up in there" to get your post count above 10....that and an intro and I reckon a mod will happen by and upgrade you to full access soon. Meanwhile....back at the ranch...probably not the first thing that comes to mind but you may want to check out your ignition coils: (and make sure your battery is good)

Hi there and welcome.

A possible culprit could be the "Illumination Control Module" There is a very detailed post/article about this on Jag-Lovers.org, written by Jim Butterworth. The module is situated on the left hand, lower side (RHD) of the steering column, beneath the shroud. It is a small black box, about the size of a matchbox and it has a tendency to short and fry. The fuse in question is a 10amp (red) mounted in the rear passenger side heel board fuse board. Might be worth a visual quick look see.

"Heel" board fuse boxes. There are two removable panels (pull them towards front of car to remove), under the rear seat, at the forward position.

Imagine you're sitting in the rear seat, feet flat on the floor, and you slide your feet back (toward trunk/boot) and the heels of your shoes bump up against the "heelboard" panels.

i had this problem after an installer put in a new car stereo.
He loosened an earth on the chassis somewhere back behind the ski jump (panel around gearstick), and it may have been as far back as under the rear seat.
Also, the big multiplug that connects the instrument cluster to the wiring loom (behind cluster) was loose, so there were two causes.

good luck!
