Default 2 questions?

question one iam wondering if altenator is suppose to run when engine is running dont seem to be any charging issues but my altenator is not turning? question 2. cooling fans they run when ac button is pushed in but they dont appear to be running otherwise engine seems hot but temp guage stays normal so dont beleive its overheating just trying to get the jist of this car and how it operates so i know if i should start looking for parts. i ran it idle for a while today and the fans did not come on unless i pushed ac button and altenator did not appear to be running but gauges all say everything is ok 1995 xj6

First and foremost, WHAT CAR WE TRYING TO FIX HERE.

IF, and I mean IF, its a 6 cylinder AJ16 the following applies.

the alternator belt is the same serpentine belt that runs the waterpump, so I reckon it is installed, or overheating would be rife. The Hitachi alternator has NO visible fan, its inside the unit, so all you are looking at is the small pulley on the front spinning quite fast. The pulley coming loose on the shaft does happen with any alternator at some time, but it is usually associated with NOISE, and FLAT BATTERIES. Put a white paint dot on the edge of the pulley and start the beast, and see if it is rotating, DO NOT put your hands in there, as obscene things will happen to your fingers.

The fans on the EARLY X300 were a PAIN, and a bridge/loop rework was carried out, so the fans came on whenever the ign was ON, and always ran with the a/c ON. Soooooo you appear to have part of the thing working, as in the a/c side.

Check the fan fuses, forgot which ones, its in the handbook.

Drop a search on here for "X300 fans", and you will quite quickly see the TSB and lots of fan discussions that I reckon will sort your issue.

If its NOT an X300 AJ16, forget what you just read, and have a drink, or 2 or 3. Wont fix the car, but you will certainly feel better.

The copper wound coil will not turn, it's the magnets inside it that turn
