96 xj6 not starting
Hello everyone.. I'm hoping someone can help me with the issue I am having of my car no longer cranking.. Let me start off by saying the car was running fine until the cooling fan fuse blew and it subsequently ran hot and from what I am thinking went into limp mode (as I've heard it called.. Car continued to start tho barely would only accelerate at a crawl.. I had a friend who suggested we clear the transmission code/light out. Once he did that with one of those handheld scanners The car no longer starts at all. Changed crankshaft sensor and the can position sensor to no evail. Any suggestions..?

goodgame,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums. Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Jaguar. As FrozenApple has already noted, by far the most common cause of a no-start with Jags is a weak battery or low voltage while cranking or attempting to crank. Have you tried jump-starting the car with another vehicle? It often helps to run the engine of the other vehicle for 10 minutes or more with the jumper cables connected to help increase the charge of your Jag's battery before attempting to crank the engine.
Please keep us informed, and when you get a chance, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.
Cheers,
Don

Thanks @FrozenApple and Don B.. Yeah I've swapped batteries as well as tried jumping it off.. I think I forgotvto mention that I've let two shops try to figure out the issue but no luck. One said computer was registering (I tried changing that as well) .. The other said it was the crankshaft sensor for which I knew wasn't the case. At $95 an hr with no results I'm at wits end.. Is there any other ideas out there that key help..

Hi goodgame,
Sorry it doesn't seem to have been as simple as the battery. Are you positive the replacement CPS is good, and have you checked its electrical connector to be certain no pins have backed out of the connector, preventing a connection?
Have you scanned the car for any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that would help point your diagnosis in the right direction?
There are lots of possible causes of a no-crank or no-start condition. Some time spent reading this thread, assembled by our member aholbro1, may be time well spent:

When the car is cranking, do you get a 200- 300 rpm reading on the tach?
Then review everything that happened between the car running (although poorly) and it not running. I suspect you will find something besides the code reset happened, like a electrical connector disturbed or a fuse blown. And, was the car running before the CPS change?

Yeah that's true.. But if I remember correctly the codes were for the trans and two of the o2 sensors.

Well that about settles it! I have not heard of a no fire from either of those- others can dispute that. So, the no fire run is due to the overheat or something totally unrelated. If it were me, I would figure out which of the big 3 it is missing. 1) Fuel - try introducing some propane into the intake while cranking and see it it fires. 2) Spark - pull coil from well, attach spare spark plug and crank. 3) Compression - Do compression test.
Then you know where to go next.
