96 XJ6 Stops Running
Brand new member here and I hope this makes sense.
I have a 96 XJ6 with 102K miles. It starts and runs great. Within 30 mins to an hour while driving the vehilce simply turns off. I pull to the side of the road, place in park, and restart the vehicle and it runs fine. I have not coded the vehicle yet but plan to when I return home tomorrow.
Occasionally when this happens, the TRansmission light (with an X through it) flashs and the car has no power for a few seconds. The light stops flashing and the car is back to normal.
This all may happen once or twice in a day's driving or not at all.
Any info from you is greatly appreciated
Thanks
John Thatcher

Update**** STill having the same problem but it is now getting hard to start.......Problem is....its not hard to start all the time ...it, like the other runing problem, occur every now and then and not consistently enough to pinpoint something. Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated
Even happens on the power stroke diesels. They made a crappy sensor there. At least it's easy to replace. I'd also check for recalls on it. Ya never know... I got 20 + at Ford's expense on trucks as old as 96.

Update on this issue.
The vehicle finally stopped running completely. I replaced the crank speed sensor and the car still didnt start. Local tech checked fuel pressure and there was none. Replaced fuel pump and car ran great.
During the replacement, they noticed a lot of junk in the tank and quite a bit of water. They drained the tank and replaced filter too and car has been running great.......................UNTIL TODAY.
Traveling through Ga, the car suddenly quit running and started right back up and was in "limp mode"????? The transmission light with a line through it came on ...... Drove it for a mile or so and turned the car back off and restarted and it was ok. The car ran fine afterwards but idled really fast and would jerk from time to time while driving.
On the one hour drive back home tonight, the car ran great but jerked a couple times and never actually quit running.

I'm sure Jagtech1 will put you right, I have a 97 x300 which developed Crank angle sender problems, that was fixed within hours and no trouble since, however, a couple of years ago these models suffered a "throttle Box" problem, it would stop suddenly and were on recall for some time!!
There is a link lead in the tank from the flange to the pump that can sometimes burn up...hope they checked it while they were in there. I replace them if I am going in to the tank. If there was water in the tank...can cause lots of issues....fuel rail coming apart, regulator issues, injector issues. Please make sure your fuel filler neck bowl drain is free from debris, so you do not end up with water in the tank when it rains.
