96MY no exterior lights or windhshield wipers
 

Hello all
I am looking at buying a 1996 XJ6 with around 62K miles on it but the car has no working exterior lights or windshield wipers.
The only working exterior lights are the hazard lights.
Anyone have any ideas about what could cause this?
The seller says he was told there was a body control module that could be the culprit.
Any hints or clues would be appreciated.

BTW, I tried to fix the spelling of windshield in the title of this post but the change I made did not seem to actually fix it in the forum thread listing page.

Best bet is to look over the electrical diagrams and find what they have in common? Including a shared ground?

I am not familiar with the Body Control Module, but you should be able to figure out how to diagnose that with the link.

The exterior lights are controlled by the exterior lamp control module ( s ) . still the wiring to the lamps and the lamp holders can be finicky to sort without driving you nuts but managable , main culprit is the 13 pin square black connectors under the 4 corners of the car ( corrosion in the under car environment that can be cleaned )

There was a change in fuse sizes in a TSB X as it went from 2 modules located under the hood to later as 1 in the trunk

This change accrued after production # Y

The wipers have 2 fuses and 2 relays

The wiper motor can be opened and change the capacitor of a certain size as well as motor clean up . there is a park micro switch in the wiper transmission attached to the electric motor . on Cap it is either normal open or closed ( important and the reach or throw of the tiny red button important )

The 4 corners connectors are the same as these 2 in the engine compartment and easily purchased

And a common denominator is the BPM , a real pain to dig out behind glove compartment

BTW, one thing I forgot to mention. The radio and the climate control system on the car still function.
If the BPM was faulty would those subsystems still work?

I went over to the seller's location today to drive the car around the block a few times and to jack it up to see if there was any damage, rust or wreck to the underside of the car.
This was the only thing I found underneath that concerned me.

The stereo and climate control have nothing to do with the BPM

There is a bite test on the climate control at the dash control panel

Is that a short wheel base where the rear side window lower glass edge measures 36 inches ? LWB 42 inch

If the BPM is faulty will this throw a code in the OBD2 system?

If the car starts you have somewhat BPM function , the BPM sums up all the starter enables like starter key position , security , engine ECU and such

the BPM fuse is in the trunk # 3 or # 4

looking to see if more than 1 fuse / power source

For this power to get up front it passes through the 48 pin connector above the fuel tank ( fwd trunk liner removed ) that can be tricky so do not remove connector . If you remove connector, you can put yourself behind the curve , the trouble is breaking the connector external lock pins in pic , the 2 connector halves have a few layers of sheet metal that cut out and this hole may interfere with fully coming together the 2 connector halves , a pain

Ensure that it has a tie wrap on the lock over bar to closed position that it makes good pin connection

Yes, the car starts and runs just fine.
I drove it around near the seller's place two or three days ago.
Just no lights (except for hazards) and no WS wipers.

The BPM is provided a ground path through the inertia / crash switch then on through the ignition switch ,the inertia switch can be reset or jumper between the 2 white wires , better to use blade type wire ends for the sellers sake seeing it and better connectivity

The exterior lights and maybe wiper have a common ground at the dash control switch panel

It is this ground path through the ignition switch that turns on the BPM ( maybe partially on being you have starter rotation so is working for that)

On all X300 fuse boxes fuse 1 - 9 are hot at all times fuse 10 ,12 , 14 and 16 require the small relay in the corner of fuse box to close , the rest of the fuses are hot at all times '

If comes to replacing IG switch it removes from the key barrel so no new key needed

Lets see what else you would be missing that points directly to pin 3 to pin 5 car frame ground not making that makes the IG switch your bullet

Hopefully I will be picking the car up Saturday or Sunday.
Then I can dive into this stuff to check out the places you have highlighted.

I picked up the car today. After replacing the two front tires due to extreme dry rot in the sidewalls, I drove the car the one hour ride from the seller's location. With a friend following me I discovered that the car does have working brake lights.

So to clarify, what works:
1. climate control system
2. cruise control
3. brake lights
4. engine starts and runs well, no issues
5. hazard lights, all four corners
6. radio
7. electric windows
8. right hand power mirror
9. small map lights in the overhead "console"
10. horn

Things that don't function
1. headlights
2. parking/running lights
3. turnsignals
4. interior lights
5. windshield wipers
6. left hand power mirror

BTW, there is also a bulb indicator warning light showing on the dash.

Tomorrow when it is a little warmer out (it's only 4°F before wind chill factor out right now) I will try an OBD2 code reader on the car.
I don't expect large amounts of info from this but it doesn't hurt to check.
I will also start checking the various fuses throughout the car.

I took the car over to my shop today and did some additional investigation.
I checked all of the fuses and every fuse I looked at checked out just fine with power on both legs of each fuse.
This included fuses for headlights dip and main beam, LH and RH turn signals, wiper power, and parking lights.
I actually pulled the main power relay for the wiper system and discovered that there was only power on one terminal and it wasn't the power terminal.
Instead it was the power side of the control circuit. I did take a jumper wire to the output side of the power circuit and the wipers did turn on.
So I know the electrical circuit going to the wiper motor and the motor itself are fine.
So in the diagram below the only terminal that had power with the key on was terminal 86.
Pin 30 was totally dead and when I used a jumper wire to go from pin 86 to the circuit output pin 87, the wipers did turn on.

Now when I picked up the car I was fairly certain that no exterior lights other than the brake lights worked but today when I checked them it seems that the parking lights do indeed function.
When I turn the light switch to running lights position, the running or parking lights do turn on and the green symbol on the switch for the parking lights illuminates.
If I then move the switch to the headlights position, the headlights do NOT turn on but the green illumination on the switch for the parking lights stays on.

I am going to look at the wiring diagrams next to see if I can gain any insight from that but if anyone reading this has any further suggestions, let me know.

Might be the problem are switches itself?

I wanted to provide a follow-up here. Today I swapped a BPM from another car that I had sitting in my shop and doing that resolved all issues with my non-wrking headlights, turnsignals, windshield wipers and interior lights.

BTW, my 1996 car had the LNA2500AA part, not the LNA2500BB one.

May have been a Canadian version that incorporates the daylight auto headlights feature in the X300 years
