Adjusting the idle on 97 xj6
#3
Ken is right of course that the throttle is computer controlled and stepped up according to sensor information coming into the unit.
HOWEVER, if we are talking about a throttle assembly that is a little sticky and won't lie all the way down there are a couple of remedies.
First is to disassemble and properly clean the throttle body with a proper chemical cleaner. Second, clean the EGR valve with the same sort of cleaner. Third, if those fail and the throttle still won't lie all the way down..........
Go to the autoparts store, buy a package of those "universal" springs. Take one of the medium length springs and fasten one end to an empty hole in the top of the throttle assembly and the other end to the mount where the throttle cable comes out. It actually looks like there is a place for this type of assembly on the car.
Make sure that the spring is only just tight enough to bring the throttle back down to bottom.
I know that on my 95XJ6 the throttle sometimes gets stuck right before bottom so that it idles in park at 900 instead of 750 rpms. It might not seem like much, but you can see the effect when you are coasting down a hill and you let off the throttle. If the throttle is stuck above bottom you won't see the "Instant Fuel Economy" achieve a 99. With the spring you will.
I have had this assembly in place for several months now and have had increased gas mileage over the long haul and have not had any adverse affects on my cruise control.
On my 97 just taking it apart and cleaning the throttle assembly and then lubing the spring and shaft with lithium grease did the job. The butterfly should be lightly lubed with wd40 after cleaning.
Peace!
Jack
