Default Brake Lamp (Relay?) problem '95 XJ6

I was getting the, in-dash bulb failure warning lamp when I applied brakes.
So, I replaced the bad bulb.

After replacing the bulb, I still have no brake-light on that (driver's) side but,
in addition, I hear a [relay] clicking from the passenger side footwell when
the brakes are applied. (I presume this is the brake-light relay?)
(Still getting the warning lamp too.)

The other brake-light works fine, as does the one in the back window.
From info gleaned online this rules out a bad relay (?) ..... I guess.

Anybody ever experience similar circumstance ?

Any pointers / experience greatly appreciated.

Sincere thanks, rogerj

You shouldn't really hear a relay clicking when you apply the brakes. As far as I know, the relays for the rear lights, amongst others, are in the fuse box in the boot/trunk.

I suspect what you're hearing is the "Not in Park" solenoid clicking, which is quite audible. This is the solenoid mounted beside the gear shifter, beneath the ski slope, which prevents the var being placed in Drive, unless the brake pedal is pressed.

I had an intermittent light problem, on the rear passenger side driving light, which proved to be a bad contact at the connector on the actual lamp assembly. I suggest you place something heavy on the brake pedal to operate the brake lamps and dismantle the lamp assembly and "wiggle" the connector. Maybe remove it and clean the contacts.

As an assurance that all is as it should be, switch the bulbs around between the brake lights, just to ensure that they are working.

SoGood,
big THANKS for taking the time to respond.
You are correct about the relay that I'm hearing...It IS coming from the,"ski slope"/shifter area. I discovered today, that it only, "clicks" when the engine is not running. Not sure why that's happening. I'm not having any other problems aside from that brake lamp not working. Confirmed that the bulb is good so, will check the socket and contacts as you suggested.

Aghhh, it's uncool to have a lamp out on a Jag....or any other blemish (IMO.)

Sadly, I currently have a slightly, "MUNCHED" front-end ! Caused by an over zealous traffic cop who stopped traffic abruptly causing a 4-car rear-ender !!
Adding, "insult to injury" all drivers were cited w/$175 fines!
Fortunately, a judge w/some common sense dismissed my fine.
Consequently, I need a new hood, windshield, & headlamp cowling. (I was at the tail end so, only incurred front-end damage.)

Anyway, thanks again for your help !
Sincerely, rogerj

Hello Immo, welcome to the Jaguar Forums. As an owner for 10 years, you must know a lot about your car already. Have you looked around this forum before? There is a vast body of knowledge on just about all subjects.

I don't think we will hear from Leepincat since he hasn't been around here since he started this thread 3.5 years ago! You must be using the search function, and that is good.

Follow Sogood's advice above. Keep in mind the bulb failure circuitry is very sensitive, and it is usually correct!

Also you will want to visit the New Member's Intro section to say hello and tell us a little or a little more, about your Jaguar.

Hi Sleekjag12,

Many thanks for your very warm welcome!
Tomorrow or thursday I will go to a garage here to see if they can fix it. Of course I will tell you the answer here in this forum for those who may have similar problems.
