Camshaft position sensor leak

Anyone familiar with this sort of oil leak? If so is there a oring that needs to be replaced?

Hi jacklynthejag,

You can easily look up exploded parts diagrams at jaguarclassicparts.com

Assuming your Jaguar is an X300, the O-ring you're interested in is part 8 in the diagram below:

You can see the part names and numbers at this link:

By the way, while the engine management and workshop manuals call it the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP), the parts catalog for some inexplicable reason calls it the "Ignition Position Sensor" and the "Engine Position Sensor." Go figure!

Also, it helps others give you the most accurate replies if you will add the year, model and engine details of your Jag to your signature. Just use your User Control Panel to edit your signature and add these details and they'll show up in all of your posts.

Cheers,

Don

I agree with Don.

BUT

Both mine had oil in that area, and I found the o/ring and Gasket of the "top" timing chain tensioner the culprit. It sits directly above that "whizzy thing" and gravity takes care of the rest.

Numbers 8 & 9 in that parts drawing.

I agree with Grant,

AND,

The cam cover gasket can also be a source of oil on the cam position sensor and exhaust manifold. :icon_lol:

Cheers,

Don

Hello Don and Grant,

Thank you for your input. I have my signature set up, not sure why it didn't show. I'll have to review my settings once again and see if anything changed. But this is on my 1997 Jaguar XJ6 4.0L with 175k. I replaced the valve cover gasket and plug well orings but they ended up leaking, so I decided if I am removing the valve cover once again I should take a look at the other leak. I will end up purchasing the O ring and gasket for the timing chain tensioner and the gasket for the Ignition Position Sensor / Engine Position Sensor / Camshaft Position Sensor LOL

If anything once I take care of this I will let you all know what ended up being the culprit.

Thank you

I may still have a few of those o-rings. They're viton, if you're interested.
