Default Can I put BMW wheels on 1996 Jaguar XJR ?

Hi All,

I am looking for 16" rims for my Jaguar XJR because roads here in Tbilisi, Georgia are not the best, I mean it's way better then i remember 10 years ago, but still - driving with my 18" is killing suspension (which I already need to fix all the bearings and ETC ... )

So, long story short - there's no rims i can find 16" in here. My question is :

Can i put 16" on the XJR at all ? and if i can - can i use BMW rims ? As you can find them cheap - 200 - 300 USD for a set with rubber on it.

I know the bolt pattern on XJR is 5 X 120.6 and the BMW is 5 X 120

Cheers

Alex

Thanks for the reply.

Is 5X120 ok ? does the 0.6mm change anything?

Opinions vary on that .6mm but I'm pretty sure others have shrugged it off and reported no problems.

Me? I wouldn't do it. It just doesn't sound right. I envision one of the wheel studs being clearly not centered in its hole.

Cheers

I'd bet on it being fine as long as you get the centre bore right (which will require work), use the correct bolts for the wheels, & make sure you pick some with the correct offset. IIRC E34s are in the right ballpark offset wise, but something like an E36 isn't. Not sure on more modern 5ers, but I'd expect them to be more likely than 3ers. Oh, and they don't all use the same CB either.

In conclusion, I reckon it's doable, but there's plenty of ways you could get it wrong!

16"s in general are possible though. Not sure how close they come to the caliper, so I don't know whether some designs may foul?

Hmmm. Not sure with the 205s on, but I think they're more likely to be 7J from an E39 than 7.5J (E28 M5 / E30 M3) or 8J (E38)? If so, they're ET20, which should go under the arch ok on a 7J rim, although not strictly correct. IIRC E39 rims are a bigger CB than most BMWs, so you may need spigot rings rather than machining on the wheels.

BMW wheels on a Jaguar - absolute heresy.

The biggest risk is likely to be the wrath of fellow members.

On a more serious note - good luck. I hope you can get a fit.

225/60 or 55 is the standard 16" tire size for x300 Jags. Those tires in the pic might be too short (low profile). With the other unknowns, it would be wise to try them on before buying, if you can!

If the wheel center bore is correct then each lug will be a tiny amount off center. It can be done, but you would want to tighten down the lugs very evenly to reduce the chance of unequal stress, and hopefully avoid vibration.
I dont much like the idea myself, and a tire shop might refuse to do this altogether.

Regardless, please let us know what you find out!

I have aftermarket BMW mesh wheels on my x300 and the only thing I had to do as other members have said is get the center bored out to 73 or 74mm, I can't remember exactly but BMW hub is 72.1/73.1 so it's just a bit smaller and I also had to take the dust cap off of my hub.

Here is a picture of my wheels.

Most 5 stud BMW wheels are 72.5mm CB, but E39 wheels are 74.1mm. So E39 wheels will go straight on, but you may find the slightly-too-big (by 0.4mm IIRC?) CB gives you issues. Do you know what BMW the wheels you've found are from?

on the older XJ40s's with metric rims guys used to put Holden HQ to WB PCD:120.65mm wheels on them
Then there where a lot of them at wreckers and smashed seems the slight difference in PCD made them snap studs after a while
