confirming correct fuel filter
 

when i search for products using my rego or vin number i seem to get linked to things that are infact the wrong parts.
i had issue when i was looking for a o2 sensor before, the searches pointed me at an xj40 which is incorrect of course.
i believe it is due to my car being an early 95 there may be some cross over with the vin. as it is listed as a
"Jaguar Soverign Auto XJ40, X300 1989-1999 4DR Sedan"
but anyway,
i just wanted to make sure that i get the right fuel filter.
it points me to ryco z400

The photo looks correct. From memory, the difference between the XJ40 and the X300 is in the type of pipe fitting. The picture seems to show copper compression washers and rubber O rings. The X300 uses the O rings, and compression washers play no part in effecting the seal. The O rings fit over the ends of the fuel pipe.

Ps I am referring to the first photo, with the “fatter” more expensive filter.
I would Google Jaguar classic spares to cross check.

I've just taken a look through my log book and can confirm in August 2017 I ordered and fitted a Ryco fuel filter Z479, it was listed as being for a Jaguar XJ 3.2, 4.0 Coupe 1991-2003
If you can figure out how to fit it without getting a face full of petrol let me know, I've changed mine twice, with my Jag on stands and me flat on my back. I tried the idea of pulling the fuel pump fuse with the engine running after reading somewhere that you can then run the fuel out of the line. However, once you pull the fuse the Fuel pressure drops and the engine just stalls. I asked a mechanic once, who just said you just have to be quick. I'm guessing having a hoist makes it a little easier for mechanics.
If you are in Australia and not in a hurry, I use online stores such as Sparesbox, Superspares or Automotive superstore when I need to do a service. The irony is that I wouldn't think the original owner would have been shopping around as I do, to get good prices on service parts. :icon_lolsign:

well knowing you used a z479 makes me feel better that that is the correct one.
i do often use sparesbox, last time however ordering from them it took about 2 weeks.
i have used automotive superstore also.
both those are great places with great prices but are a little slow at times.
i will definately look around for better price. fleaybay.com.au is always handy.
i really only use supercheap or repco when they have sales or i need something quicker.

yeah face full of petrol sounds like the plan. lol.

I can also confirm Rico Z479 is the correct filter, I can also confirm your findings that there are many incorrect parts listed to suit the X300 range.
Just need to have a browse through E Bay listings, some even have spark plug leads to suit.
Sadly all part of the learning experience with Jaguars.
There are also many common parts interchange, for instance the fuel pressure regulator which is common to a fuel injected VK commodore just to mention one example.

the common parts to interchange is certainly something that is handy to find more about.

look down inside the fuel filter fitting ends on the filter and there should be O - rings hiding in there recessed in a groove

My 1988 Chevy C2500 uses the SAME FILTER so I just buy the one that fits that. No confusion at the parts counter.
No crazy questions about Jaguar parts.

John makes a very good point, I had an issue once purchasing a set of rear break pads listed for a 95 x300. It wasn't until they had arrived and I had the old ones out that I realised they were never going to fit.

Harrumph! Maybe RockAUto doesn't ship "down under" but they list 9 different offerings in order of ascending price, and you could buy 1 ea of the first 8 listed for the price of a single Z479 in your link. Y'all be gettin' skull-drug on parts prices!!!

To Bob's point above about the Chevy C2500, the X202's (S-type 3.0L) use a fuel filter that is common to the 2003 F-150, 5.4L.(In case anyone else, here, is saddled with S-Types as am I)

I just ordered and received a bosh filter F0119 from rock auto. It was listed on their website as fitting a 1996 xjr. However after reading this I just checked for the o rings and none there. Furthermore it looks like a compression fit on the inside. As the car is new to me I've never changed one before but sounds like I have the wrong part?

Rest assured you have the correct filter; the o rings are not necessarily included. I have a new Ryco Z479 in my parts supply, it also has no o rings included.
As previously pointed out, it is a very common filter fitment, fits many G/M vehicles.
The O rings are Jaguar part CAC 8968 2, an equivalent would be readily available.
The o rings already fitted may still be suitable, however good practice to renew if in doubt.

well yeah they do, but you have to factor in the price of shipping and the conversion rate also.
so that makes a huge difference. firstly atm it is about AU$1 = US$.63
then shipping so it always looks better on paper than it is.
also it is easy here to get the z479 for half the price that was in the link i posted.

but overall yes.
even with shipping and conversion sometimes buying overseas is cheaper, but often shipping ruins that equation.
