Diff fill and seal replacement
Howdy All,
New here and have a few questions. I posted in an old thread but didn't get any responses and my diff is weeping pretty bad. On the back of the pumpkin, I see what looks like a vent on the top right of the back. It has a black plastic cap on it, Is this where I fill? I thought it only vented pressure from there, but I can't find a fill plug. And Right side output shaft seal leaking. Can I just replace the seal or do I have to replace the bearing, retainer, and seal? Also, does anyone have a scematic of what the drive stub will look like when I pull it out? Thanks in advance for any help! |
The fill plug is to the right of enter and 4" up from the bottom of the diff. It might be covered with caked on dirt and oil. It's there, though :-)
I'm 99% sure that replacing the output shaft seal means disassembling the output shaft entirely....removing the bearings, etc. I'll try to find out for sure. I know for sure that's the case with the older Jag diffs so I wouldn't be surprised. Cheers DD |
You get all vehicle parts schematics on Jaguar Classic Parts website. You need to remove the bearing retainer by drilling a series of holes through it, then widen it by driving a chisel into the holes youve drilled. Remove the bearing and seal. Refit in reverse but you need a 10 or 12 ton press to get the new retainer on. You can probably aid refit by baking the retainer in the oven and freezing the output shaft et al in the freezer.
Keep looking for the refil plug. It's there. |
Thanks Doug, I'll be back under there this evening so I can fill it up until I can get a kit ordered. Is the Salisbury in X300's the same as in XJ40's?

The diffs from about 1989 to 1997 sedans are pretty much the same (JURID FLANGE). The early XJ40 (around 1988 has the 4 bolt 'U'joint pinion flange and were 2.88 I think). The JURID should all be 3.58/1 ratio. Some are limited slip and some are open.
The 2 differences I found from the XJ40 to the X300 are the 4 fasteners on the pinion snout are different threads (10 X 1.25 or 10 X 1.50) and the output axle shaft flange fasteners (XJ40 Hex Bolts and X300 Torx Bolts) Other than that they are completely interchangeable. I have 4 diff units that were being scrapped when I was at the dealer. I thought that was a waste so I was told to take them home NOW or they were going in the trash. Some are XJ40 and some are X300 and I just rebuild one and install it in a customer car. I don't pay attention to what is what, I just use the one that is repaired and use the proper fasteners. bob gauff |
Big THANKS to Doug, Straight6DOHC, and Bob for the information. Found the fill plug. I had been looking at it the whole time thinking it was just too low to be a fill plug. After closer inspection, looks can be deceiving the way the diff sits. It needed about 3/4 quart so it still had 1 1/4 in it. I pushed some 85-140 in there and hopefully that will hold me until I can replace the seal, bearing and collar. Does anyone know what parts supplier will save me the most $ on a kit or the parts individually?
Now if I can get a main jet for the front SU HD8 and find the brake fluid leak on the back of my '71 XJ6 and get the A/C kit installed on the mgb....I will be done with Brit car maintenance for a few weeks! |

Found these on my hard drive and thought they might be useful. That means you need the rubber seal too. I'm from Scotland so I cant help you with suppliers I'm afraid. Do SNG Barratt operate over there? (No affiliation).
