Default Differential Oil?

Hey Guys,

Anything special about the diff oil in the XJ6?

I need to top mine off and have good stuff but just wanted to be sure it didn't have a compatibility issue. Off the shelf high quality

Doesn't mean much as long as its the right specs

I use redline shockproof heavy in my XJR6

I also had my LSD shimmed and a machined spacer made to replace the crush tube as well as gear change on my XJR6 all done so the diff could be thrashed LOL

On my new X350 and my first Jag a XJ40 I just changed the oil every 2 years

With the XJ40 I used mineral oil in the X350 I use synthetic the XJR6 I used redline shockproof heavy

I assume 2 quarts is enough? It calls for 2.2 quarts but is there usually .2 left in there even after draining?

Also, is the procedure to drain it all and then refill through the top plug until it starts seeping out of the fill hole?

Thanks

Default Diff oil

2 litres should be fine , or at least was for me

Just make sure you can get the filler open before you drain or you've had it

Method seems right - fill until fingertip soaked or overflows

And be aware, it's a beggar to fill - large syringe and/or hose will definitely help as it's just plain awkward

And drain carefully as old fluid will likely be horrible

a "Beggar". I love the different expressions I'm learning from people all over the world by owning this car.

I'm going with Redline Shockproof Heavy oil. Everyone agree with that choice?

Thanks!

A largish hose, say 3/8 inch ID fitted over the tip of a funnel hung from a magnet on the rear quarter works well. Just pour it in and let the lube work its way down the hose.

Sounds good to me. But, just to be clear, ordinary off-the-shelf 80/90 diff oil would be fine as well.

Cheers

Redline Shockproof Heavy is good stuff. That's what I use in the transmission and bevel box of my Moto Guzzi.

The difficult to find large syringe can be replaced by an easy to find, and more practical, pneumatic cylinder, the cheapest you can buy from the market. No need to be double end cushioned/magnetic,etc., etc.
They come in certain piston diameters and variable strokes.
A 63mm diameter and 160mm stroke cylinder, has a volume of ~500cc (498.75cc)
The thread to attache your fitting-hose is 3/8"
The fittings also vary, so you can attache the hose (diameter) you want
So, you can suck the fluid-oil from it's tank (or the steering system's oil from the reservoir, or whatever has to be sucked out) the and press it where you want, easy.
Attached is an example of one brand, there are a looooot of pneumatic brands

About the oil: Lubrication Engineers has oils, i use them wide, car (engine/gearbox/differential), motorcycle, factory, no problems, very long runs, you can send them samples, so you have e feed back of your condition.

Check the attached JPG file, it's a simple pump, made out for ~80 euros, all fittings are "push in" type, you can change the configuration and hoses diameter, any time.
With the above described cylinder/pump i drain ~50lt marine engine's oil in ~5 minutes, you can drain much more water in much shorter time from the boat if you are in real trouble also....

Hard to find large syringe? Try ebay as loads available

That being said, I bought a selection of sizes from local chemist, but did explain why I wanted them - they were most amused when I explained it was for a brake fluid transfusion!

Smaller syringes are handy for squirting oil or cleansers in tight corners / spots - a selection of various diameter clear hoses also help in tight spots

Also useful for draining brake and ps reservoirs when replacing hoses

Syringes and hoses of various sizes - 'don't let your toolbox be without them!'

For sure you're right.
But a syringe is a syringe and a pump is a pump.
Since i use the Forum not only for my XJ, but for general purposes-knowledge, i find fair enough to show an other type-philosophy of suction.
