Finally Looking to Buy my First XJ6
 

Hello, all. My name is Sean and I've been in love with the XJ6 since I first drove one while working at Jiffy Lube straight out of high school. Now, I have the opportunity to buy one and am looking at a 97 XJ6 which is exactly what I was hoping to find. I wanted desperately to stick with the I6 but also wanted OBD2 diagnostics so that limited me to 96-97. Then I stumbled on this beautiful black on black XJ6 that was built in May of 97 so it may be among the last XJ6's ever built.

In the past, I've owned an 02 X-Type but that was a mess. I'm wondering if you guys/girls can give me any tips in buying an X300 like what to look for, common issues, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mechanically there is not much I can't think of other than catalytic converters and oxygen sensors going bad at 100k. That's virtually every car though. The memory seats often stop functioning, the bulbs that light up the buttons on the ski slope burn out but it's not a very difficult repair. The clock loses pixels, also can be replaced or sent for repairs. Look for rust on the wheel arches and in the trunk well were the spare and battery are.

I hope that you are going in to this with your eyes open. The X300's are now 22-25 years old so you need to be realistic. Any car of that age will always need maintenance and overhaul of components. But if you find one with a solid body and good interior then your issues will be straight forward and affordable.

I'm assuming here also that you will do your own spanner work. Any 25 year old car is not a good idea for someone who is stumped on an electrical problem after checking the fuses, or needs to go to their local garage to get new brake pads.
