Fixing steering rack end seal leak
 

Read in another thread about fixing the steering rack leak at the ends of the rack can be done with the steering rack still attached in the car.
I got the left side end apart and was curious for those that have done this already if I went far enough in disassembly or do I need to keep going. I currently have the end that bolts to the car pulled off and the one seal (green with metal exterior) and a couple plastic bushings plus the big o-ring out. I'm gonna need to do this, too. Don't suppose you have a link to the other thread handy, do you?

Read about it a few days ago and haven't been able to find the thread since but it was just a member mentioning you can change the outer seals with the rack in the car instead of replacing the whole rack. It didn't have procedures on how to do it. I'll keep looking for the thread.

Basically all I did to get to that point was:
1. Remove the tire
2. Remove the outer tie rod
3. Remove the boot.
4. Remove the inner tie rod
(Could probably shortcut and take the boot, inner and outer tie rod off as one unit if you want by just pulling the boot forward and removing inner tie rod)
5. Removing two 6mm Allen head bolts that hold the end that bolts to the vehicle to the rest of the rack.
6. Removing the two nuts and bolts that hold the end of the rack to the vehicle and sliding it off. And there's a seal and plastic bushing in there as well as an o ring around the outside.

It's pretty simple, I took it off hoping I could match the seals up at a hydraulic supply store or something, but after seeing them I doubt they'll have it so I ordered the kit.

About two months later, replacing those seals didn't work, actually leaking worse now. Ordered a rebuilt unit. I have one control arm bushing torn on the left side lower control arm and a subframe vee mount rubber separated from the metal. So I'm changing the vee mounts and all the control arm bushings while I wait for delivery of the rack.

I am not into snake oil. However, I had the same leak on both of my 1997 XJ6 and 1995 XJS. Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak is a miracle fix. I add three or four ounces and fixed the issue. Scarecrow already replaced the seal , if it's the wrong size , Lucas Stop leak might not work.
