Ok so a couple questions regarding the gear shift lever.
so i noticed 2 things.
when i put from drive into reverse the reverse light is not always coming on.
My trouble shooting shows that the gear lever needs to move just slightly up past reverse to turn the reverse light on.
and also with park sometimes park is not properly engaging.
seems to me that the likely situation is that the gear shift surround needs to move up slightly so that the stick is moving slightly higher when it slots in.
just seeing if this makes sense to others and if people can follow what i mean.
as it just feels to me that its slightly out of allignment
The signal for reverse, park etc comes from the gear selector module. It's the black box at the bottom of this picture. It's more likely that this needs a tweak for alignment.
If you look at the mounting screws you can see the module has slotted holes for slight adjustment.
thanks.
just those two screws that can be seen in the pic?
looks like a little pain to get to...
hopefully my right angle screwdriver can get in there easy enough.
i would guess i need to move it down (toward the rear of the car a little).
To quote my previous post 6/1/21 -
Typical unthinking English engineering with the linear switch - Two Phillips head bolts in a position not easily accessed by a screwdriver, not even the angle type.
My simple solution replace them with suitable hex head bolts for much easier access with a spanner.
it looks like the problem i have is actually the lever adjustment.
there is a little play (wobble) in the lever,
and the point at which it clicks into revers is actually sitting higher than the notch.
the linear switch appears to be working fine as the housing illuminates correctly.
but if coming up from N into R the lever actually needs to go above the notch for R for it to engage.
it looks like a bit of a pain to get in and adjust all this stuff.
should be able to see what i am talking bout at the end of the video. (sound on you can hear when it "clicks" into gear)
I've never had to adjust a Linear switch, the mounting holes are pretty limited in giving you much movement.
Adjusting the selector cable is the most common fault.
Loosen the lock nuts on either side of the mounting bracket and slide the cable fore and aft until the lever slots
into the detent in the gear shift surround for R D and N. Then tighten the lock nuts.
the switch can be opened and cleaned with a pencil eraser , fluid intrusion area
There is an adjustment on the different rotary position sensor with the 4.0 liter engine if you have the 4.0 and it's different transmission ( ZF4HP22 vs. 24 )
Will have to double check where the reverse light is triggered by
