Glovebox retrofit.

Is it possible to fit a glovebox from a later car into a non-glovebox XJR6?

katar83 01-07-2019 01:41 PM

Yes. Just make sure not to close the lock with a key when you get a glovebox as you can lock it with any key but open only with correct one :)
Don't ask me how I know 😂

Steve M 01-07-2019 04:09 PM

Thanks.
Anything particular to look out for?
I was wondering about the possibility of adding a 12v socket in there somewhere to run the satnav.

I looked into this many years ago when I bought my Daimler, so memory is hazy but...

I bought a used glovebox and tried to fit it. Although it fitted in the space, the profile of the glovebox where it meets the centre console was subtly different to the knee bolster it was replacing and it didn't look right at all. I took it out again and didn't investigate any further.

It may be that the glovebox I had was damaged/distorted somehow. I don't know. But I note that the part no. for the centre console changes at VIN 757942 which I think is sometime early 95. Could be coincidence or not.

Just saying that you should try and compare the parts before you buy as it may be more work than you sign up for.

It's a Jag, why should it be easy!

1995 X300 Models did not have a glovebox as the 1994 XJ40 did not have.
It probably has to do with electrical stuff and the passenger-airbag which was added first in 1994.
From 1996 on they had glovebox again.

Maybe it is not possible to put a glove box to a 1995 X300.

My 95 VDP was retrofitted by the dealer and has no weird gaps. The PO was very proud of the fact that it had been retrofitted. So it can be done. I have no info on how.

Steve M 01-11-2019 04:42 PM

Aha, a positive result!
I shall contort myself in to the footwell when I get home and see what is involved.

G'day Steve,

I have a 1995 X305 which, when I bought it, had a glovebox fitted and being a RHD car would be the same as your car, in fact my car was first owned by a gent in Nottingham and privately imported to Australia by the fellow from whom I bought it. My car was manufactured in Nov 1994.

I have some pix of that area which I took when replacing the heater core some years ago which might interest you, if you'd like I can email them to you or post them here.

Cheers,
Jeff.

Steve M 01-12-2019 03:55 AM

That's great Jeff.
If you post them here then everyone can see what is involved if they are considering doing the same.
Just let me 'buy it now' before you do; there is one available in the right colour!

I have attempted this myself in the past few months. After tracking down the box, door, and surround panel bolster I went to install it but the knee bolster/panel surround does not fit as flush as the original blank knee panel. The bracket on the underside of the airbag assembly seems to hinder the panel fitting full into place properly. The bracket for the airbag must be different and prevents it fitting fully. I am still planning to do this conversion if I can figure out how to make it work. I have photos showing the issue. Will try to attach.

The reason I took all this apart was to replace the heater core.

Thanks Watto.
What does BPM stand for and how much has to come out to remove the cover panel?
Don't fancy messing with the airbag.

watto700 01-13-2019 03:18 PM

G’day Steve,

The BPM is the Body Processor Module and controls the body electrical services such as the lights and washer/wipers.

I believe it also controls the dealer programmable options which vary dependent on which market the car is sold.

Cheers,
Jeff.

The glove bax came in around 3 months after the launch to the public.
I had both. The pouches on the front seats were your glove box.
It had to do with the new 1 wire system and the air bags.
All these years later is it really worth it?
Good luck!

I use the cupholders in the X Type a lot so was thinking of modifying the centre armrest to take a couple; this will obviously reduce the storage space in there so I thought of retrofitting the passenger side glove box.
It's all a bit vague at the moment and dependent on getting the correct colour bits and the difficulty involved.

Cafcpete 08-13-2019 02:40 AM

I know this thread is a few months old but just want to add I have an accessory booklet that lists the glovebox retrofit fo 95 1/2 model year, so it was an official option.

I think you might have to update the rear springs if you want to carry all that prestigious selection of luggage
