Growling noise and weird startup
This past Saturday (two days ago) I took my 1995 XJ6 in for an oil/filter change and new front brakes pads/rotors. Within 20 miles of driving it I noticed two issues:
1. Last night, while parallel parking it to go to dinner, I put it in reverse and hit a small bump. Suddenly the car started making a low-pitched growl and was much noisier overall than it had previously been. The noise is not related to engine speed, and I popped the hood to listen to the cooling fans, but was unable to determine if they were the cause. The cooling fan housing is broken on my car, so it tends to make more noise than it should anyway. This extra noise and growling is constant now.
2. Twice this morning, upon starting, the oil light came on, the accelerator pedal would not work, and shifting the gear shift did not shift the transmission. A restart immediately fixed the problem both times.
Any ideas?

OK, my thoughts this early in the morning.
When the oil filter was removed/replaced the mechanic may have accidently disturbed the wiring that is VERY close, and related to the oil switch and the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor).
This TPS on the 4ltr also controls the transmissions behaviour???.
The growling, weeeeell, some persistant investigation is needed here.
The fan shrouds repaired would be a good starting point.
Unplug the 2 fans, observe if the "growling" is still present, thus eliminating them from the process.
Ask what spec oil was oil was used, as sometimes a too heavy weight oil will case weird noises. I run 10W40 in all my Jags all year round.
Lastly, and my favourite. How long since the trans fluid was changed???????. That alone can create havoc with noises in any car.
