Light Bulb Issue RESOLVED
Hi,
Is there an accurate listing of the lights for the 1997 XJ6L interior anywhere? I have a bulb burned out that illuminates the shifter and I can't even find that Jaguar acknowledges it's existence. Anyone know what it is and where I could find one? Any and all help welcome! |
From memory there are two bulbs: one for "backlighting" the gear shift quadrant and another that actually follows the gearhsift movement to illuminate the "P-R-N...." letters/numbers.
The backlight bulb (again from memory) is a "grain of wheat" bulb....a tiny thing that I got from Radio Shack. It doesn't have a traditional base or contact. You have to remove the old bulb from the socket after un-bending the wires....and installing the new one is naturally the reverse operation. The "P-D-R...." bulb is, I think, part of the "gear indicator lighting module". I've never opened up the module to investigate replacing the bulb Others with better memory cells will chime in Cheers DD |

This is the "grain of wheat" type bulb I was talking about
12V Microlamps (2-Pack) : Microlamps | RadioShack.com Cheers DD |
That's it exactly! Thank you very much! I was going nuts trying to find it.

You can often find grain of wheat bulbs at model railroad or hobby shops.

GE 37 is the actual replacement bulb. Rock Auto has them if you don't mind paying shipping. Keep in mind the replacement bulbs will not have the blue coating and so will illuminate in off-white, which I find easier to see anyway.
Great idea as always, Doug! I didn't think of checking the Shack. |

Do you have to remove the J-Gate? |
J gate does not need to be removed, just the surround.
Be careful of the small plastic clips that hold the chrome piece to the housing. The bulb just pulls out and the new one pushes in, however there is not a lot of room for fingers for this operation and it is fiddly. Get a spare bulb or two, I lost one in the J gate housing when changing mine |
