Fairly common. Many 'could be' scenarios but the usual fault is weak/broken solder joints on the printed circuit board inside the ABS control module. There are outfits out there who repair these modules. Modulemasters, for one.
As the circuit boards age this situation is becoming more and more common with many brands of cars.
Cheers

Module rebuild in California. May be others.

Before spending anything on a module repair, you should probably check and clean the connectors on the wheel sensors. A faulty wheel sensor will cause your ABS light to come on intermittently.

Stu

Wow, about $60 USD to rebuild the unit, that's a great deal for a complete rebuild.
There are also some DIY links in this and I think the X308 forum on how to repair the solder joints yourself pretty easily if you have some basic soldering skills.

The face of the sensors pick up debris that cloud the sensing signal that is easily cleaned . You don't have to jack the car . Best to spray the sensor bolt and hub / sensor contact area overnight so they especially the plug comes out . You don't want to break the plastic part ( I broke one of mine ). Just clean them off when you get them out . Replacement sensors changed part numbers midway through X300 production the lefts do not work on rights from what I've red on this forum . If you want to put a meter on them to see if one is out of range ( 1300 ohms if I remember ) you can unbolt the module connector and read socket pairs 5-6 LF 7-8 RF 9-10 LR 11-12 RR but the generated signal it makes is pulsed shape you can't see without spinning . Since your light is intermittent I would not recommend spinning them for the work involved . As far as the harder Modual repair it is not that bad for some split them open around the seam others just drill a large hole to re-soldier the common trouble point . See pic below for the point . Just glue over the hole after . see topic

If the ABS light only comes on intermittently, I agree with StuG that a good clean of the wheel sensors might sort it. Mine is permanently on together with the Traction Control Failure light (TC is optional on X300; standard on XJR) and cleaning the wheel ABS sensors couldn't fix it. The scanner diagnosed it to be Traction Control Motor Actuator Failure.
A new ABS sensor for pre-1997 X300 would set you back by GBP212, so a rebuilt service of US$60 each would be a good deal.

If you look at the bottom of the Traction Control Motor Actuator you might find the wiring insulation has deteriorated to the point that it probably is faulting . If you drill out the locks on the casing you might be able to rewire the 2 power wires or flush out the top position feedback sensor if that is dirty and loosing contact assuming there is a wiper arm . mine is in this condition and have not repaired it yet .
