Default Need New Tires

Hello all, I don't have much idea quality from good to bad tires. I can get a set of Hankook Ventus V2 245/50/16 cheap, are these any good? I know the size for our tires are supposed to be 225/60/16, did anyone else find better results with a different size?

I've also bought the standard stock Xj8 rim in chrome finish but having a little problem fitting them on my front hubs, the bearing dust cap seems to poke out a little too much for my rim hub cabs to fit perfectly. Anyone know a way around this? I thought about using a dremel to cut slits so the hub cabs can slide in snug, will that be risky for dust to get in?

Your speedo will read wrong with that size
Here is a link to a tyre size calculator Visual Tyre Size Calculator | Kouki Tech that will help you find the correct tyre sizes hope this helps

The dust caps can be ....um....re-contoured with a hammer and drift. Or even hammer and sturdy screwdriver, I reckon.

Mount the wheel on the hub and snug it down just enough to leave a witness mark on the dust cap. The area on the outside of the mark needs to be flattened out. Takes about 10-15 minutes per wheel.

Cheers

The previous owner of my car added some very cheap tires under mine. I wish he had never done that. Apparently he was on some kind of budget the last year he had the car. The tires totally screwed up the flawless ride. Alot of tramlining with size 245 and even with a good balance, the vibrations were so bad! I believe up front there were Minerva tires and on the back a brand i dont even know the name off because its not on the tire, just some webpage haha xD

All im saying, just be really sure what tires you put on your jag,do some extra research and maybe spend a few extra euro/quid/bucks. Before you know it your ride is worse then it was.

After changing my tires with a better quality, everything was allright and smooth again.

I got a set of 4 new 225/60 x R16 Toyo Teo Plus tyres a month ago - rolling circum=676mm.
Absolutely fine, recommend them - reasonably quiet, good wet & dry grip, good handling, cured tramlining.

Speedo over-reads, as before with old tyres.
To get pedantic: driving up to roadside speed displays, indicated 60km/h is really 52. According to iphone 'Dynlicious' app, when undertaking acceleration tests (yes i am sad..), 150 km/h indicated is really 139 ...

So in my case at least, X300 3.2 speedo overreads quite significantly even with correct tyre size.

(Soon I am going to fit a set of 18" Asteroids with 255/40s - I will see how that changes things.
I have become a bit of a Gollum about wheels - they are my 'precious' - I have a good set of chrome Turbine 16" wheels as per my photo, but have 2 sets of Asteroids in the pipeline - one set a bit bent but getting fixed, the other set brand new old staock, boxed, from sbwheels.co.uk which are on their way to NZ at the moment.)

Never going less than 50,s on any car ever again to many buckled rims and horrible rough ride and rattling my car to pieces

The XJR,s came out with 255/45/17 on 8 inch rims the car was rubbish with those size tyres nearly killed myself the day I bought it
was a thousand K home trip
As soon as they where stuffed went to 235/50/17,s ah what a jaguar should be

I even have 50,s on the wifes jeep it has 255/50/20 all-round drives beautifully

Goodluck!

Still on the fence on the 255/45/17 vs 235/50/17 size. No issues rubbing with the 235's?

No the235,s don't rub and they look better on the 8 inch rims also less likely to gutter rash them as well higher profile and speedometer is more accurate +tramlining nearly eliminated

when I had the 255 tyres no one commented on the tyres as soon as I went to the 235,s I got comments like did you get wider tyres and did I get new tyres

FYI, the fella I bought my 97 XJR from happened upon a brand new set of Dunlops, with wheels. He called to see if I wanted them, since he is now Jag-less, and has no use for them. If you're interested, PM me and I can forward on his info.

Well...new 235/50/17 tires are fitted and have removed about 90% of the tramline issues. It definitely doesn't hold the road like the 255's did in hard turn ie cloverleaf at 50. But for my current use it feels like a smoother ride, steering feels lighter as well. $96 per tire i'm quiet pleased. With the worn out tires off the road noise has gone way way down, which allows the supercharger to be heard much clearer

Edit: These are the ones I had put on. http://www.tirebuyer.com/tires/uniro.../p/tv130000190
