The problem with the vent removal is that it cannot be done externally. The cover has to come off as the vent makes a 90 degree turn inside the cover and is affixed from the inside. So if one wants to clean the vent and avoid removing the cover, removing the cap is the only option.
Agreed on the hose, and that is what I was thinking too.
Yeah, I need to get the car up on jacks and change the differential oil soon. It's on the list.
Yes i tried it several times levering off with screw driver and pushing it back on no problem. Just be carefull not to lose the insert as it may drop out when the outer hat flicks off. Pipe cleaner should be fine to use mind you the tube is made of a hard plastic
Cheers Ray.
First off, I'm extremely sorry to revive such an old thread. However, I popped the Cap & Hat off today on my 95 to clean it as mine had seemingly been clogged and causing the seals to leak for a little while now and I didn't think I would clean it enough just brushing it. Removal was easy, flat head, or a seal hook can pull the cap right off, also correctly the little hat under it flew out which I found. After cleaning it with a brush and some degreaser, put tinier cap back on, then the larger one and the entire tube pushed inside my diff
After a quick cussing and screaming session I am now left with seemingly the only option to remove the entire subframe, monostrut, control arms and differential cover in my driveway tomorrow. If ANYONE could please provide some insight on other solutions if any I truly am worried I may not have the skills or flexible ratchets nor the patience or money to do so and I am honestly at a loss. Right now I have a screw with JB Weld on the end on it sitting inside there against the cap, held in place by a tube waiting for it to dry and hopefully once it does I can pull the cap & tube through. If anyone knows how to remove the cover any easier way or maybe of a sucking device I can use to stick to it and pull it through.
sidenote// also sorry for my very prominent worrying, money is so beyond tight at the moment due to recent job loss & my father is deathly sick with ALS and this all just through me so off. I saw the pin in place on the exterior like stated thinking it was holding it in place and wouldn't push it but it did and popped right off, I am an idiot I guess.
I haven't done this work but looking at a pic of the back of a rear suspension unit I reckon you could raise the rear of the car onto jack stands and remove all the stuff on the back of the diff without dropping the whole suspension unit. That'd be a whole lot simpler and quicker.
Here is the part number for the breather JLM631. If you Google it you should be able to find a picture of the complete unit.

I thought so but after taking a larger look at things it turns out they made the absolute worst Diff cover on the market with this one and it's below multiple braces, the mono strut and a smaller brace that holds the lower control arms in place. The diff cover literally has tubes to hold the 2ft long control arm bolt and threads through the diff in the picture I provided so I think dissassembling the entire control arm system is the only way to get to the cover which is INSANEEE.
My first thought is that if your JB Weld technique can at least get the end of the breather started back through the hole in the diff cover, you might be able to use a suitably-sized lag screw to partially thread into the breather pipe to give you enough grip to pull it back to its correct position. I know clearance is limited with the monostrut and trunk bulkhead, but if the screw was not too long you might have a chance:
The breather is an elbow that installs from inside the diff cover. Once you get the short end pulled back out, it will stop when the long end contacts the diff cover:
Just an FYI, there is close to a zero chance of removing these big bolts that are holding the wishbones to the diff bracket. You're either going to break them or damage the bolt head. If you're going to have to remove the diff cover, the way to do it is to drop the A frame down, remove the monostrut, then remove both wishbones together, still attached to the bracket, then the diff will drop down enough for you to get to it, technically will hold ok on the driveshaft and exhausts but best to support a little in case your exhaust pipes aren't in best condition.
Its doable on the driveway, will take you most of the day. If you decide to try free the big bolts the trick is to lock the head with a socket and breaker bar against the ground and then move the wishbone up and down until its free, only then you'll be able to knock it out. Its also a good chance to replace the bracket with one from an XJR with additional supports for rear anti roll bar.
The other tip I could give is to grind the end of the bolt that holds the monostrut on one end, otherwise you'll never be able to get both bolts started. One end is relatively easy but the other is close to impossible. If you grind the end of the bolt at an angle then you can hammer it in into the hole and then start it in the threads relatively easy.
You might also find that the shocker lower bushes or the upper doughnuts are knackered.
Good luck!
