Qestion about bang when I put car in park on 96 XJ6

hello everyone, sometimes not everytime when i put my car in park it bangs a bang undernearth sometimes 2 bangs, only does this when the car is put in park mode, does anyone know?? thanks.

Very odd, as you are, (or should be), completely stationary when putting the car into 'Park'.

on a hill? on a slope? level ground? try setting the handbrake first?

sounds like a sticky parking pawl but automatic transmissions to me are like swiss watches. I'd rather a manual transmission any day. not too many mysteries I can't figure out.

As with the above, more info, mechanical or explosive bang? Front of car, middle, or rear.

And as above are you completely stationary. Have you tried to let it settle down a little in Neutral for a few seconds before you select Park?

hi, i almost id say 90% of the time get a small "roll" on the car even if I am on ground level, if I do putt he handbrake up I noticed I dont get the bang, the bang sounds like a bang from the front from the tranny maybe, but its def a bang and its def coming from under the hood of the car in the front area.

I think your 'little roll' is the thing. When you put the car into 'Park' it must be stationary, stopped, because when Park is selected, a pawl is released to go into the drive to lock the transmission, (and the car). In effect, it is like having a transmission brake. in fact many people only use Park and never the handbrake. I use both on my present car, (Rover 75) and have done on all previous cars including a 1980 XJ6, which had a Borg-Warner transmission. IF there is movement, the pawl can engage very noisily as you have found out, and it also strains the pawl mechanism too as it is not designed for this sort of thing.

Try a different technique - hold car still on the footbrake, engage Park, then release footbrake. You can also apply handbrake as well, but make sure car is completely stationary

all it is is a little steel pin that keeps your car from moving & if it breaks bad news will rain from the skies! I'd say get in the stick shift habit & set your handbrake all the time in conjunction with the footbrake

hi thanks for all inquires, so what would be the fix for this solution, what excally do I have to have inspected and would it be expensive? let me know thanks.

Translator 02-10-2010 11:00 AM

If you look into all the above replies, everyone says 'stop the car fully' before changing into park. This means totally without movement no rolling etc.

Keep your foot firmly on the brake before shifting either into or out of park.

As regards inspection well that would be the gear box. Gear box repairs = expensive.

Change your driving habits to correct the problem before you break it.

Regarding the auto box on the x300, I have just got a 4.0 sovereign and have noticed that unlike my XJ40 there is no option to pull of in second gear and disengage first. Also did ford get rid of overdrive as I don't notice the car changing up at 51mph?

panchostatus 02-11-2010 12:33 PM

no it definitely came equipped with overdrive, and if I'm spelling this right, ford sourced the GM 4L60E transmission for the X300. being GM, it is usually synonymous with unreliable garbage. I haven't had any problems with mine [knock on my big wood desk] but I've kept up with the maintenance, i.e. fluid level, flush, filter kits, and the rest.

Translator 02-11-2010 12:42 PM

Atann,
The other point is that on your XJ40 the option to select second does not mean that you take off in second and cut out first. It just means that the car won't change up past second. ie 1st then 2nd.
