question about xj6 looking at buying
Ok, i've gathered that electrical problems are the big thing to watch out for. I'm looking at a beautiful 1996 xj6 with 112000 miles, one owner, all maintenance done as scheduled, never any major repairs. The only thing is the cd changer works when it wants as well as the clock. every other electrical function is perfect. are these signs that theres a bigger problem waiting to come out or are they easily fixed problems?
also what should i look for, i know it has a lot of miles but it's doctor owned, and you can tell garage kept and loved.
also, do xj's have a subwoofer anywhere or only with the upgraded sound system more of curiosity than anythign there.
lastly, for a pristine xj6 with 112000 in SC (no snow ever) is 4k seem like a fair price? he's asking five we agreed on four.
i'm also looking at a 1995 with 68k miles also pristine no mechanical issues but the owner will go no lower than 7k.
so any thoughts on that would be appreciated. thanks!

The CD not available problem and the clock are well known issues and are NOT an indication of anything except it is an X300.
For what its worth, (damned little!) I go for the $4k car. I bought mine 4 years ago with 125,000 miles and it now has 235,000.
Buy one of them to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step! Welcome to the club!

Both the clock and the radio can be repaired...no big deal.
As far as I know only the models built with the Harmon Kardon upgrades stereo had subwoofers
$4000 sounds good. You'll never find more car for less money.
The 68k mile car may be a little better but probably not $3000 better, and 112k is still young in Jaguar terms
Cheers

I own a 95 XJ6 and a 97VDP,
BOTH of them have the clock issue and the CD player issue. Both were easy fixes. I can help direct you to sites where you can get the parts for installing an aftermarket stereo if you like. I would also be happy to let you know how cheap and easy it is to replace that picky CD changer if you want to stick with CD tech.
I usually don't say I love any "thing", I reserve that term for people. But these cars come pretty close. The engines are easy to service (except for maybe the starter). The parts can be found if you know how to hunt.
The two electrical issues are really the only two with this car. Electrical issues haunted some previous models more than the X300.
116000 miles? Doug is right. If it is Doug Dwyer, he is always right. That's just a babe. Barely broken in.
Something to look for would be the coils, see if the bodies are cracked. If so, I can tell you how to remedy that as well. I can also direct you to a good merchant for said coils.
Go for the 116k car. 4k is a good price. I paid 4k for one with 140k and would do it again in a heartbeat.
Peace!
Jack
P.S. PM me if you ever need schematics or anything like that.

hey i would be very interested in seeing those sites if you could let me know where i could find the repair for the cd changer, clock, and i'd also be interested in installing an aftermarket head unit in the future so wherever that web site is.
also, do you know of any head units that match the jaguar interior, my bmw i had a flashy head unit but in this car i really like the simple black controls and would like a simple, probably even non folding face head unit in all black. seems nearly impossible to find a basic head unit without sacrificing the actual quality of it.

Clock:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=280324399692
Radio:
You can send the radio back to Alpine for a going-over....in new Jersey I think. I'll try to find the address. I need to send mine in as well. Last I heard it was $125 flat fee.
My experience with aftermarket radios is a bit limited but it seems like you have to go very "high end" to get away from the Johnny Space Boy look with all the flashing displays, 53 tiny buttons, etc. Others will chime in on that.
Cheers
