Cool Radio Antennae

Hi folks....so my 95 XJ6 has what sounds like a 'stripped gear' in the mechanism that extends the radio antennae. It does not extend or retract, just makes an awful cracking sound when the car is turned on or off whilst the radio is on. I have a custom paint job and 20" rims, so the car NEVER goes through an automated carwash, hence my idea:

I'm a total do-it-yourselfer and adept with most things Brit (4 Land Rovers and 3 Jags later I better be). However, have never attempted my idea, which is to disengage the motor for the antennae, extend it to the desired length and somehow lock it in that position (completing the process will inevitably involve cutting the power to the antennae motor as well, I'd guess)....

Any crafty person out there who has tried this and has any tips would make my Christmas.....

Happy Holidays and Safe Motoring!

I replaced my power antenna assembly with a amplified antenna, it was a very simple and easy mod, took less then a hour and gets rid of the whole antenna assembly and makes the car look much cleaner with nothing sticking out twenty feet in the air, never mind that the radio reception is actually better.

You could pick one up at auto zone for around twenty bucks.

Can you post a link to the exact thing you put on your car? Mine broke off a few months ago and I've been wanting to replace it and would prefer one just like yours.

Chances are all you need is an antenna mast and you can get one for around $20.00 +/- a few dollars. Add a little WD40 and it will work just fine, of course this is assuming the antenna unit is still good and in most cases it is.

hey holeshotz, can you tell me which adapter did you buy, because I went to pep boys and bought a antenna and its dosent fit directly. Also, how did you take off the original antenna assembly? I dont see bolts or screws, thanks.

Give us a pic of your new antenna. I know some aftermarket assemblies will mount straight in, the only modification needed is for the electrical connection (just cut off the jaguar plug and use crimps)

You'll need to take off the formed carpet lining on the inside of the boot.

Sounds like holeshotz is talking about an antenna assembly that does not extend outside of the vehicle (kind of like mounting your TV antenna inside your house attic instead of on the roof)?
