I'm tackling the sagging headliner while on lockdown. I'm going to try and get the board out and just replace the fabric itself. Can anyone recommend a good headliner fabric, preferably one that matches the Jag original?
There are plenty of re-trimming companies that can supply an exactly matching replacement. An internet search should find them but it depends on your location and if they are still operating in the current covid19 situation.
Make sure you get the 1/8" / 3 mm thickness instead of the relatively more popular/available 1/4"...particularly if you are also doing the sunroof panel. With all due respect to V126man, after 20+ years of sunlight exposure, even if you had a couple yards off the very bolt of material used to produce your car back in the 90's, somehow stashed away in a warehouse and preserved for your use now, it is highly unlikely it would match any fabric you are not changing, such as A-pillar posts, overhead console, or, possibly sunroof inner panel. But you can get very close.
Have no idea where you are....but here in southwestern Ontario there's a chain of big stores called Len's Mills. They sell primarily fabric off bolts in many colours, styles, materials...including a section of headliner fabrics. They also carry the high-temp adhesive.
I'm in South London. We're in lockdown so I'm looking to have this delivered really. From what I'm reading there are two headlining colours, grey and beige. I have black leather interior and I'd say my headlining is more of a grey than a beige. Would it be right to call it Nimbus Grey?
If you use an other-than-original grey, the visors and several small parts will be a noticeably different shade. I found this out by using a "close match" but non-original fabric in another car.
It's difficult telling whether it's a grey or an oatmeal; with flash on it looks oatmeal, with flash off grey.
So the PDF would suggest I have Nimbus Grey, since I've an XJR with Charcoal leather. Have I interpreted the chart correctly? Is that enough to go on to be sure I've got Nimbus Grey headlining?
Yes... I was editing my above post to include the correct code of LFJ for "Nimbus Grey" fabric. Hard to tell the two apart unless side-by-side I think.
I bought mine from Martrim as a kit including the correct glue for around £80 including delivery.Excellent service. I ordered enough material to retrim everything. The colour match was perfect and I only needed to recover the roof panel. We don't get a lot of sun here so the original had not faded. https://www.martrim.co.uk/

Thanks, yes I've considered them; my problem is knowing what colour headlining I have.
Is it a given that a charcoal leather interior will have Nimbus Grey headliner?
Parts listing shows LEG leather as Warm Charcoal with roof trim in Nimbus Grey.

I got Martrim to send samples to confirm the colour match before ordering.
