road trip.. what spare parts to take ?
 

So the plan is to drive my £500 X300 from Wales to Gibraltar and back. Around 4000 miles across Europe. What spare parts should we take ? What kills these big Cats without warning that I can prepare for ?

Easy one. Crankshaft position sensor, couple spare coils, drive belt if current one in unknown condition and maybe basterd hose if you haven't changed it.
Nothing else needed really, apart from obvious fuel tanker around.

To katar83's excellent list I would add a couple of spare relays of the type used for the fuel pump, etc., spare fuses in all the necessary ratings, a couple of liters of engine oil, a gallon of distilled water, several zip ties, a roll of duct tape, a package of 1-minute epoxy, a tube of Superglue, jump-start/booster cables

Also, in preparation, check to be sure your cam cover gaskets are not allowing oil to leak into your spark plug wells, which can lead to misfires. Clean the sludge out of your air intake and crankcase breather plumbing and your throttle body, taking care not to contaminate your TPS.

Clean all the important battery power and ground points (those referenced by the ECM and TCM, the engine ground strap, battery terminals, negative cable ground point, the bulkhead battery power terminals, etc.).

Thank you for advice I will be loading up with spares. Don’t want a simple failure to stop the trip. Fitted my leaping jag bonnet badge today so she will lead the way.

Don't forget your credit card!

Check your spare tire and jack before your trip. If you also carry a tire air pump (some come as a set with the battery booster) and a puncture repair kit, so much the better.

Damn, I would suggest a fully charged mobile phone, road side membership card, as well as Steve's suggestion.

Most of the others should have been attended to by now in the ownership, right??

So what your saying is all that’s required is breakdown cover, mobile phone to raise said cover and beer while we wait for rescue 😃 We are travelling with 5 other equally worn out Jags so sure enough some one will break down.
Any recommendations for good breakdown cover, most I tried don’t cover anything over than 15 years old.

The X300 is rock solid, and even after abuse, keeps on keeping on.

Silly shiit, like loose connectors, hose holes, etc, will happen to any car, and being able to predict that would be better than winning the Lotto.

When I flew to pick up both my X300 cars, one a 3.2 the other an R, I found a service mob prior to setting off home (3500kms), and had an oil change, brake fluid flush, trans fluid (drop and refill), generally looked around under the beast, belts, hoses, etc. and hit the road. Apart from fuel, nothing happened.

Remember, I knew NOTHING about the AJ16, or the X300. The nearest I came was the daughters XJ40 3.6, which as a teenager she could NOT kill, and she tried.

I have basics in all the Jags, tape (for hose holes), fuses (or tin foil), wire, BFH, odds and ends in a shoebox.

My X300 is owned by another Elderly Jag nutter, and is now nudging 300000kms, and he knows ZERO about cars, if it starts he drives it, and apart from locking the keys IN the thing (still dont know how he managed that), it just travels interstate regularly with him, and I get no phone calls at all.

I really think you will be fine, they are good reliable cars, and I trust them.

Road side assist, no idea from down here, sorry. Ours cover everything, even the disabled mobility scooters, sweet.
