Question Third light cover - how is it secured?

The interior plastic cover/hood that slides over the rear window brake third light assembly on my 97 XJR keeps backing off and away from the window.

The cover just slides onto the light assembly, and doesn't seem to clip on or otherwise mount with any positive action to keep it in place.

I don't know if there were some sort of clip(s) that are now broken or gone, but I was wondering if there were some sort of "trick" to get this cover to stay on.

The trick is to stay CALM.

The colour coded cover has 2 "push clips" on the lower face. Simple apply pressure to them and the cover will slide off.

The part that STICKS to the window is seperate, and held to the glass with double sided tape. This is the thing that is coming away from the glass.

Clean the glass section carefully and well, then retape the base thingy, then slide the cover back on.

It is fiddly, as room is not plentiful.

Thanks Grant, apologies, but I guess I didn't explain my situation clearly....

The light fixture is still firmly attached to the glass. That is not the issue.

The problem is that the color coded cover is backing off the light fixture as I drive.

I removed it completely and saw two square holes on the underside that I did assume would accommodate some sort of clip(s), but I didn't feel any corresponding clips under the light fixture. So I don't know if the clips (or nylon rivets) that would engage these holes are broken, missing or somehow "disengaged"?

That's what I'm trying to determine, what is missing or not "engaging" properly. When I push the cover back over the light, it will just slip right back off. I assumed it would positively engage some clip or I needed to install some sort of clip underneath.

AHA, the mud clears, luv it.

Yep, there are PLASTIC locators in the glass bit that appose the tangs in teh cover.

My suspicion is that good old rear glass HEAT has relaxed this arrangemnet.

2 choices:
1) Try and "retention" the plastic tangs, good luck.

2) A small "dob" of black RTV on the face of the coloured bit where it meets the glass, slide it back into place, and hold it for a few minutes to "set".

Mine has a very quiet "click" as it slides on. I constantly loose the LH end globe, so it is removed semi regularly.

Well, I confirmed that both of the clip/tabs that lock into the third light housing are broken off. That would explain why the cover eventually backs off.

I'll have to figure out a trick to secure it in the meantime (that may be permanent) or perhaps replace the whole assembly.
