Transmission fluid change

Hi, In my 96 xj6 4.0L what are my options to remove all the transmission fluid?
Is the filter a screen or does it need to be changed and how often?
Is the procedure the same for my 95 xj6?
As always thanks for your help!

Same, same.

The filter is in fact a metal mesh, so changing is NOT as ritical as the units that run a Dacron typpe filer.

I drain via the dipstick tube, and inspect the fluid for ":metal" bits. If no bits, resecure that tube, fill the thing and drive. Do it again about 200kms +/-, until what comes out is the same colour as the going in stuff.

If there are metal bits, then off with the pan and filter, and find out what has busted, but the busted ones are a rare thing.

That ZF trans LOVES clean fluid, that's about all.

You'll have to scroll past my tussles with the drain plug (which some models are reported not to have) but deep in there are pictures of the metal bits collected on my magnets. I also practice the gradual fluid renewal method of draining what will drain, and replacing it with new every so often on 3 or 4 consecutive engine-oil changes. (7,500 mile interval)

When Grant finds metal bits, realize his magnets are likely saturated. On the other hand, as you can see, my magnets had a good 1/8" covering all around, yet the transmission was working fine, and still is....forget what the mileage was when I pulled the pan and changed the filter (whilst renewing the stripped drain plug) but I'll hit 250K (Miles, not KM) this week or next, still no xmsn problems.....
