Default trouble finding replacement key

I went to the local dealer a couple of days ago to try and order an extra key for my '95 XJ6. After looking up the key with the VIN from my car, the guy at the parts counter told me that the keys are no longer available. I called the dealership up in Pittsburgh and the guy there said he may be able to order a blank key that I could take to a locksmith. Has anyone else had trouble getting keys for these cars?
Thanks,
Dave

I had no problem at all....did it all over the phone and fax....but that was several years ago. Dealer looked up the code, cut the key, and mailed it to me, saving me a 120 mile round trip.

AFAIK a conventional locksmith does not have the equipment to cut the "stick keys" (I think they're actually called "Tibbe" type keys....or something like that.

I have a gut feeling that the dealers you've spoken with have some inexperienced help.

Cheers

The blanks are available on ebay/internet. Make sure you get the one that fits your year as there are differences.

I bought one from ebay and sent my key code for them to cut it.BUT when it arrived it would only lock the door(which I read somewhere that is normal)and would do nothing else.

Do a forum search for TSB 76-64 that I uploaded years ago.(it is actually for the XJS/XJ40)

It has all the info to read the key and you can find a dealer that actually cuts the keys instead of ordering them from Jaguar Parts.
You can read them the cut numbers to get the proper key if the VIN report is incorrect.

You can also read the door lock barrel for the cut if the ignition key is lost and is the same (has not been replaced with a different lock)

Doug:
I agree, it seems like the dealers that I've spoken with aren't familiar with these keys or how to cut them. I need to find one that can help me once I figure out the key code.

Plums and Brent:
I saw the keys that you are referring to on ebay yesterday for around $30 per key, but Brent is saying his didn't work for the ignition so I'll probably not go that route.

Bob,
I found your original post on how to read the key code and printed it out. I guess the next step is to call around to find a dealer who would be willing to cut the key and mail it to me?

Thanks for the replies!

Jaguar Replacement Car Keys TIBBE JAGUAR KEY CUT TO CODE - NO CHIP.

They cut your keys and ship them to you for 40.00 bucks. I did this and it works great!

If that doesn't work for you, I know for a fact that Union Park in Wilmington, Delaware and Jaguar West Chester in West Chester, PA do have the key cutters. They may have to order the blank, but they can get the key code and cut it for you. I have no idea on cost for either but they do have the machines to cut the keys. Good luck.

Thumbs up Keys

Hello. I bought a new blank key on ebay for $ 10.00 including shipping to Canada. I took it to the Jag dealer and gave him my car vin number they cut
the key for FREE. You can get this new key at truckmug on e-bay. Because
mine is a 95 it did not need to be reprogramed by the dealer. Which would have
cost one hour of labour time. GOOD LUCK. Paul

NEW note. The dealer is in Woodbridge just south of # 7 in the auto complex..
